    Have you tried using the Appearance option under Preferences? There you can adjust background color, tint, etc.

    I have found that this happens mostly when zoomed in multitrack. If you use the (+) and (-) keys to zoom instead of the mouse scroll, the playhead continues to move. Literally if you do not touch the mouse and zoom using the keys instead, the playhead moves no problem. You can usually use the mouse afterwards.
