    This would help greatly to have this built into the camera tracker. I'd like this to be a system wide command to create a 2D null from a layer's 3D position and/or convert/copy a layer from a 3D layer to a 2D layer. rotation and scale might be a bit difficult to get, but position would be nice.

    There is an expression that I use A LOT to get this:

    this_comp.layer(“your3Dlayername”).to_comp([0,0])

    Or

    l = thisComp.layer("My3DLayer");
    l.toComp(l.anchorPoint);

    https://creativecow.net/forums/thread/2d-position-coordinates-of-a-3d-layer/

    paste that into the position parameter of your 2D null and link to the 3D layer that you want the 2D position of. This is my work around.

    When after effects removed the ability to paint directly in the composition window many, MANY years ago, I hoped it would make a comeback, but alas, it hasn't. I'm not really sure why this can't be implemented again since it has already been in the program before.

    I've done Cel Animation (Scanned paper) in After Effects since 2001. It's pretty tedious but the results can be good. One tried and true method involves painting everything in Photoshop where each Cel is one layer in the PSD file. scanning and painting this way is rather tedious, but the results look good. best practices involve creating an actions pallet to perform repetitive tasks like removing the white paper and filling areas of color. Once it's painted (and each layer named properly to the corresponding cel name/number) you import that psd into AE and sequence the animation by opacity Hold Keyframes.

    I have a copy of BattleAxe, but haven't been able to fully dive into it yet. It looks fantastic, but i can't full vouch for it yet.

    Check out Animation paper. it may have what you're looking for: https://animationpaper.com/

    I'm kinda agreeing with you on this one, Jordan. I'm completely despising the "popularity contest" feel of this board. To give you an example, I recently ran into a problem in AE that I couldn't solve. I search Google and the top hit was post I made on this forum 2 years ago with no replies and 1 vote (mine). that is not what i call support or feedback.

    There's a BIG difference between stabilizing footage and 3D camera tracking. Checkout SteadXP vs N-Cam:
    https://steadxp.com (stabilization)
    https://www.ncam-tech.com/ (Camera tracking).

    Sony A7S III is doing stabilization very similarly to how SteadXP does it. I believe GoPro's methods are very similar as well. but they are all 2D fixes. Getting access to that data to feed into and drive After Effect's Warp Stabilizer would be ideal and a VERY welcome one. Getting camera position data to create a virtual camera is a totally different thing all together.

    While this would be fantastic to have, this is camera software, camera accessory, and hardware limitation issue not an After Effects issue. CameraTrackAR is a fun tool that I've used with mixed results, and would be very curious to try it with a lidar enabled iPhone to see if there's improvements. I've been in search of this from camera developers for over a decade once i found that many cameras already had accelerometers and/or gyroscopes inside them. If you look at .R3D files in Redcine, buried in the Metadata panel, there's a column that has accelerometer data. I've been trying to access this since 2009. I sat down with the lead software developer for RED at the time to ask to get access to this data through the SDK so tracking software could use it as a hint or seed path for motion tracking. To the best of my knowledge, they've never heard of anyone asking for this.

    the whole virtual production wave going on right now is exciting for me because they've figured out that you need to find the camera's position and track it live in order for the technology to work. Having that data pass through the pipeline will give postproduction and immense resource to pull from. I'm hoping that camera manufactures start realizing this and begin implementing solutions.

    scrolling through the timeline is seriously laggy when there's a lot of layers and or masks. It's really frustrating.

    At his point I'd be delighted with a 3D working space that had a grid plane, a viewable origin point, and the ability actually see things that are outside the boundary edge of a viewer window.

    open Nuke, put the cursor over the viewport, press Tab to got into 3D... that's what we want. make it look like that

    I've been doing match-move work and camera tracking for over 15 years and the AE camera tracker is extremely frustrating to me. Yes... Camera Tracker needs a way to turn off the autosolve. the problem is that it repopulates tracking points on each solve. there needs to be more features added to it to make a manual solve function useable. there needs to be a way to use masks to eliminate or concentrate trackers, otherwise trackers are just going to keep popping up on the footage where you don't want them. the second is manual tracking. there's already point tracking AE, so why can't we use those as user tracks to help the camera tracker solve a shot? third is film back size. The FOV is calculated by the Sensor Size / Film Back dimensions and the Focal Length of the lens. AE defaults the camera to a full frame camera sensor size which gives the wrong focal length and thus, the wrong camera position. There's a LOT that needs to be fixed in the camera tracker.
