YES, YES, YES. This is the worst nightmare in Premiere. It makes the software feel practically unusable with this kind of footage, and yet my clients insist on working with it, I HATE this. I've got absolutely the same results like you, super smooth playback in Resolve, and Premiere...

Absolutely. I have a new mac pro 2019 and when playing back red footage, my powerful GPU sits completely idle, while all 16 cores of the CPU are at its max and the footage is not playing back smoothly, unless I go to 1/8 res...

This is absolutely neccessary. The amount of clicking just to enable time remapping is ridiculous if you have a lot of clips to edit.

I can only agree, owning the same setup- h264 footage is the worst, and using Premiere on a display with a resolution above 1440p is an absolute pain in the a** ! The whole UI is so stuttery and laggy and slow, it's almost not usable, unless you launch the app at 1/2 (!) resolution mode. Unbelievable.

I'm seeing the same problem. Working with two ProRes Proxy files at 2944x2160(2,0) resolution. AWFUL stuttery playback. As soon as I close the multicam window it runs smoothly, but when the multicam view is open, even just in the source monitor, the timeline playback is super choppy.
    This wasn't here before.

I'm running on a 2019 Mac Pro with the latest Versions of OSX and Premiere 14.4.0, 16core, Vega II GPU and 192GB of Ram.

This problem still persists. With each update I'm hoping for a fix but getting just more and more hopeless... These displays are not around just since yesterday. Is there ANY official statement on this from Adobe?

The same problem persists in Premiere too (and lightroom classic, but at least there you have the option to switch to CC, which solves the issue!). In Premiere it's even worse because you are scrolling ALL THE TIME.

Awful, awful awful! Got a brand new Mac Pro with Dual Vega GPUs and STILL. What’s worse is that this is a problem that spans across the entire creative suite. Lightroom and premiere are just as laggy and slow in the UI. This makes me wanna switch to final cut, sadly for after effects there’s no alternative.
How can we make adobe move on this?

Under Review  ·  Reg Santo Tomas responded

As Wes noted, we are looking at many areas for optimization and have made strides in the last few releases already.

We recognize there are still many areas to improve performance and we are investing in appropriate areas.

Threads that are catch-alls are often non-actionable. Please keep giving us specific feedback on what workflows are slow for you.

Technical solutions may not always be as obvious as some people may be suggesting as the application architecture is often very different than people’s conception.

Short answer. Yes, we want to and will make it faster.

What I find even more pressing than the actual rendering performance is the UI performance on the new Mac Pro. I have an XDR display attached and the interface of Premiere is SO sluggish and slow, it is unbearable! I refuse to edit a single more project on this and am forced to learn Resolve right now only because of this. It's not possible to develop an editing flow like this. Just look at the attached video!

    What a useless request.
Maybe be a bit more specific? How is adobe supposed to help you with this?
I have an actual Idea: Add VCE Hardware encoding Support to media encoder so that we can put our nice GPUs to work actually.

Why has nobody commented on this? Heck why this has never been implemented?? This is an absolute scandal as it would boost the performance of media encoder INSTANTLY on existing systems.

    Hello everybody!

(This post was co-authored by Tim Kurkoski (After Effects Product Owner), Andrew Cheyne (After Effects Engineering Manager), and Victoria Nece (After Effects Product Manager).)

This thread has been sitting here for quite a while without a response. To start, we want to apologize for that. We haven’t been ignoring you or your feedback – this is just a particularly complex topic. That said, it’s time for us to check in with you, clarify a few things, and give you an idea of what we’re looking at for the future of After Effects, especially when it comes to performance.

To start, we fully understand that you want After Effects to be as fast as it can be – utilizing your computer’s hardware resources to render as fast as possible. Over the last several years, we have been working on the performance of After Effects constantly. Sometimes those performance gains…
