    Thanks for taking the time to post your issue here.

    Would it be possible to get a log file from your AE run? It might help us narrow down the situation that you are encountering. You could send the log to aebugs@adobe.com, and Post a comment here when you have sent the email. We'll need to manually check that inbox.

    It is really odd that your caching was obviously present but playback not performant. If you can reproduce this outside of a IP project (you mentioned just text could be an issue?) that would be helpful to know.

    If you could talk generally about the types of assets you were using, any plugins, layer types - that could help us have a better understanding of what is going on.

    @Eduardo,

    You can actually rearrange the timeline as you describe though in a roundabout way. You can drag most columns in the TLW to change their position, layer/name isn't one, but you can drag the others to the left/right side of it. That though is a stopgap to solve your current request, and likely should be expanded on to allow that column to be moved itself.

    @Chris,

    Our next release will bump the version number out of the 18.x.x range and there isn't really a way to fix it without it being a new version (whether that is a bug release or a major release). It has been fixed for a few months in Beta, and will be in the next official release.

    As for the importing of a previous version of modules or templates, it is because the beta app gets its own preferences folder. This isn't the exact directions you need: https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/preferences.html

    But it will get you to the folder where the preferences are stored for each version. You can copy the contents of C:\Users\[username here]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\18.4 to C:\Users\[username here]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects (Beta)\18.4
    Delete the beta 22.1 folder, and then when you launch it should prompt you to copy the beta settings.

    Just curious if you have tried the beta application recently? We are actively working on performance there and as things become ready, they will be moved to the release version.

    With the new beta there are preferences for setting the resources you would like AE to use which I would expect would help your focus issues where AEs performance is decreasing and a min/max boosts it temporarily.

    Hope this helps sort out those performance issues you have been seeing. And if not, it would be great to get further into the details of what version you are using as well as what your system hardware looks like?

    Which applications do you use with AE that give you the most pain points?

    Sorry the delay in this response, was out at the end of last week.

    If you could send an e-mail to aebugs@adobe.com with a link to a dropbox (or similar service) upload of your file, that would be very helpful. Let me know if you need suggestions in this regard.

    I will keep an eye out for your e-mail and see about reproducing your issue locally. To help in this investigation, what system + OS are you running the application on (windows, mac, etc). There might be something in this that is os specific.

    In discussions with other team members, there is also a bug that is present for Lumetri properties in the EGP panel. I assume you are on the official release, does your project use this feature by any chance?

    Thank you for posting here about the issue you are seeing. This is one way to post about a bug, here in user voice. Uservoice doesn't have a separation of bugs and suggestions so it unfortunately gets put all together.

    Would you be willing to send this project to the AE team? It would help in tracking down whatever the issue is as it might have something unique that we didn't have in our testing sweeps.

    Is the crashing/opening all related to attempting to open this specific project or?

    Any details you could provide related to system (os, cpu, graphics card, ram etc) would help as well.

    We have removed this information from the current render and brought the purpose of it into a new format. With help from those who downloaded the beta and provided feedback, we have created the Composition Profiler.     Would love to hear your thoughts once you get a chance to use this new tool in the timeline window instead of waiting until render out to see this information.

    We have put together a bug report with the log you have sent in for further investigation. Thanks for taking the time to do that.

    For the slow network drive, you could try disconnecting from them/diagnosing the slow drive, but that might not be possible depending on how you use them.

    Will link this post as well to the bug and update here as we get more information/have further questions.

    A fellow dev had the following thought: "My guess is that Ae is calling a Windows shell API, maybe something which results in drives being enumerated, and there's a mapped network drive on the user's network that isn't responding (or is running very slowly). Any other app calling into the shell would end up hanging too"

    Curious if you could generate a log file for us to look at.

    On one of your successful launches, you can enable logging:
    Launch After Effects and go to Help > Enable Logging.
    Work in After Effects for a few minutes.
    Then go to Help > Reveal Logging File.

    You can keep that file location open, try launching the application (where it will likely fail) and then send that log file to us at aebugs@adobe.com

    If you do that, please comment again here so we know to look for your e-mail.

    In trying to narrow this down further, do you run any other Adobe software? If you use other Adobe software, are you experiencing similar issues? I am trying to determine if this is an AE only issue for you or if it might be related to licensing and causing issues across your various programs. I am leaning towards licensing due to the i/o item you mentioned as well as safe mode.

    I know first launch after install has to do some kernel setup work that makes launching take longer, but this sounds like you have let it go and it never moves forward.

    To quickly get out of the text edit box simply press tab. You can pressing tab to cycle through all the fields of that dialog box and you can use it to highlight the ok or cancel button and press enter to perform those button actions without using your mouse.

    In this particular case it is a bit of a design limitation of the Libraries panel that we can not access the destination library options (get a list of what libraries you have that we could save to) without the panel being open since it is a CEP panel and the request for paths is to the panel. Unless you are proposing that the drop down list would only have Libraries and then some new dialog or new popup would show up with a list of libraries destinations? There might be some issues with that for timing of population for destinations... but is something to think about.

    A set it and forget it option in preferences though is very much possible, and probably more likely for an easy solution that doesn't change workflows/expectations of the process. Likely this preference starting state would show libraries locations as a default since we have been shipping with this functionality. If creators had to enable libraries as a destination that might cause greater confusion than giving options to disable the libraries destination.

    I will enter it into our backlog for consideration. Thanks for taking the time to submit this request. Feel free to respond back if you have any further thoughts to add.

    Unfortunately, in order to get a list of destinations from libraries, that panel needs to be open. I understand that it sounds like you do not want to export to libraries, so an alternative solution would be needed. Would a preference option for mogrt export stating that you do not want to export to libraries (or some effect there to) be a potential option that would interest you?

    Sorry this is happening to you and thank you for posting here. Do you get a chance to send a crash report or is it launch and the application and system crashes in one go?

    I know I have experienced whole system crashes in other applications when an old graphics card was incompatible.

    Could you please comment as well on your system information? OS, processor, GPU, it could help point to the issue.

    Hello Stuart,

    Thanks for your suggested improvement. I will have to look into it, but it is likely waiting for a response from AME and if it never received the response from AME, it would be bad to prematurely unqueue it. Would your preference be that it unqueues it upon clicking queue in ame, then requeues it if the queueing fails?

    Just curious to hear more of how you envision this workflow and what the UI would look like. I would expect it is better for most to get extra renders listed then miss exporting one from the queue?

    Hello,

    Thank you for reporting this issue. If you recall any specifics around the crash it would help us isolate that bug to fix it.

    After Effects does have an auto save feature, and can be modified in your preferences under the Auto-Save panel. It requires an initial save of the project but then will function according to your settings.

    Is this version 17.0 or one of the more recent releases? Monday (pacific standard time) we released version 17.1. Even though opening and closing the application solved the issue, it would be good for us to know what version you had the issue with.

    Hello John,

    Thanks for posting here about the bug you have been running into.

    We had found a bug for an issue like this when running Touch Bar Mac systems on a pre-Catalina OS. Updating to Catalina resolved the issue on those systems. If the system cannot be updated to Catalina, a workaround on those systems is to keep typing and delete some characters and the save as field normally corrects itself after that.

    Does the description above match the computer running into this issue?
