It's 2021 and this problem still exists. I just imported a bunch of DnxHD quicktimes for a TV series I'm working on. It's got an embedded REC-709 profile, but you can see the footage is clearly Log - and I can't override the color profile in the interpret footage options

100% this - this would save me hours when applying comp effects to similar shots. It seems like something that should be technically simple to implement - I could probably even write a script to do it. But it really should be built-in behaviour in AE!

There's still so many essential plugins that still don't support 32bit float (or work unpredictably in colour managed space), but this is probably the most egregious omission.
And GPU acceleration would be a huge boon too.
