This is an issue with the latest updates and shows exactly why the CC method is the wrong direction to take the program. After Effects 17.0.6 & Media Encoder 14.1 are just not working very well together.

The semi-official fix is to downgrade your After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder programs. This is what the tech support people told me to do...

    Do this by:
Closing your open after effects and AME
    Opening creative cloud
Clicking the gear to get to settings
Go to apps - then DISABLE the auto-update flip switch

    Then downgrade your software
Go to the After Effects area for AE 2020,
Click the three dots and select After Effects 17.0.5 in the older versions list.
And do the same for Media encoder - drop that down to 14.0.4

This fixed my problem and should fix similar issues.

I use Media Encoder to export files - while continuing to work. I que up multiple comps, let them start rendering, and continue working immediately instead of waiting for renders.

Each version of After Effects looks for a specific version of AME. If it isn't on your machine in the folder it is supposed to be - it doesn't work. And you are stuck rendering each sequence the old slow way. Plus, many codecs and presets aren't present in the original render queue system.
