Can you tell me which version you downgraded to? I have the same problem.

No matter WHAT I do with After Effects, I spend more time filing bug reports than actuall using the programm 🤣🤣🤣

No, no plugins at all actually. I'm not even a heavy AE user, right now I use it to create social media video ads (we're talking about 10-15 seconds each), so very very "mild" usage.

One thing is that the system already run for maybe 2 weeks without a reboot. Now, freshly restarted, things look better RAM-wise. But still, AE shouldn't crash this way only allowing for a hard reset of the whole system. If there isn't enough RAM it should at least give me a chance to free up some. Or it could just use the "Purge Ram" function internally.

I don't know if this is also such a big PITA on Mac systems (I had those problems on Win XP, Win 7 and Win 10). But other programs do manage to get along with Windows memory, why just AE not?

I really wonder why this is not getting any more votes. Is it that just we two have this problem for over 15 years on like 6 different machines?!

NO MATTER how much memory, which OS, whatever memory settings, AE WILL eventually crash with an "out of memory" error and as no other programs are able to react on anything - because all the memory has been eaten up already, a complete reboot must be done.

This is how my screen looked like when I had to long-press the power key:

Thank you for filing this bug report.

We need more information in order to investigate:

    - What format is the footage that you are working with?
    - What version of After Effects are you using? The version number can be found in the About After Effects dialog (ex., After Effects 16.0.1).
    - What OS and version are you using? (ex., Windows 10 or macOS 10.13.6)

    Hi, thank you for replying.
The version of AE is 16.0.1
The footage was a HEVC video file from my gopro 7 hero black (mp4 container).
    My os is Win 10.

BTW, the "all videos are green" could be resolved by clearing all settings.
The crashing problems could also be widely resolved by the following:

    - I have a hybrid GPU (nVidia+intel, also called "nVidia Optimus"). I used "discrete mode" in BIOS, set to only use the nVidia GPU.
I set this to "hybrid" again, so it makes usage of the on-board intel AND nVidia GPU.
    - Now the preferences have to be reset so the new GPU settings get applied.

The first step, I found out on my own. There is a troubleshouting article about _disabling_ a second GPU (I think it was for AMD models). But for my settings, actually enabling the 2nd GPU helped.

OH and WHEN I actually change something, After Effects crashes. LOL. Have been feeling so lucky getting it even to start and now anything I do causes it to crash.

Forgot my specs: Win 10 Pro for Workstations (Build 17763), Lenovo 20HK0005GE, BIOS 1.24, Intel Xeon E3-1505M v6, 64GB RAM, 2TB of disk space (much of free space, too on both M2 drives).

The GPU is a NVidia Quadro P4000 (1792 Cuda cores, 8GB), Driver is 411.63. There's even a Video BIOS version for this one, too: 86.04.2f.00.42

Sadly, still crashes after the 13.0.1. I really really hoped this was the issue you tried to fix so quickly. :(

Also happens now with Premiere 2017Pro. Maybe there are some faulty codecs in the package now used by all video products?!

    Another strange observance:

    Didn't give up yet:

After adding 2 keyframes anywhere else on that property, the third(!) becomes editable again. No matter where you place it. That's super-strange.

So I went into the wave editor and got the error message: "attemt to get an item address from a position outside of list length" after I tried to move the keyframe from within the waveform editor.

So yeah, this composition is dead now :(
