Thank you for filing this bug report.

Is this on Windows or Mac? Which version of the OS?

Can you provide us with specific steps that cause the crash? ex., Apply Curves with X settings and add X number of masks. Or whatever steps lead to the crash.

Or, could you send us a project file that demonstrates the problem? You can post a link here, or if you prefer you can send it to aebugs@adobe.com. Please post back if you send an email, as we need to check that inbox manually.

A crash log would also be helpful. Do you get the Adobe Crash Reporter dialog? If not, please choose Help > Adobe Crash Reporter, and set it to always show the dialog. When you get the crash, make sure to add a comment. We also like it (but it is not required) when you include your email…

One year on and this bug is still as apparent as ever. It's not just curves that causes this but I see it daily with levels and gaussian blur. Pretty much any effect that is GPU accelerated causes a GPU effects error. 'This is likely because your GPU is out of memory'. GPU usage is at 3.5/11GB. ANy chance of fixing this please, Adobe?

Not only does MT have this problem but even when it does work it will periodically freeze and you have to switch comps to make it come back to life again. I've had it happen to me around 50 times already today and it's been like this since 15.1. Bit of a **** take really, especially as I reported it a year ago and there is still no fix https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2514217 I've even been told by phone support that the AE team are aware of the issue and it's a conflict with nVidia drivers. Well 5 different nVidia drivers hasn't fixed it and interestingly Premiere doesn't have the same problem.

    Hello everybody!

(This post was co-authored by Tim Kurkoski (After Effects Product Owner), Andrew Cheyne (After Effects Engineering Manager), and Victoria Nece (After Effects Product Manager).)

This thread has been sitting here for quite a while without a response. To start, we want to apologize for that. We haven’t been ignoring you or your feedback – this is just a particularly complex topic. That said, it’s time for us to check in with you, clarify a few things, and give you an idea of what we’re looking at for the future of After Effects, especially when it comes to performance.

To start, we fully understand that you want After Effects to be as fast as it can be – utilizing your computer’s hardware resources to render as fast as possible. Over the last several years, we have been working on the performance of After Effects constantly. Sometimes those performance gains…

Thank you for filing this report.

We need more information before this report can be investigated.

If the problem occurs when you open a project, can you send us the project? It would also be helpful to get an After Effects Log file.

To generate After Effects Log.txt, choose Help > Enable Logging. Restart After Effects, then choose Help > Reveal Logging File. Cause the problem to happen, then retrieve After Effects Log.txt from the folder. Note that logging will automatically disable after 24 hours.

Post a link to your files here, or if you prefer not to post publicly you can send it to aebugs@adobe.com. (If you send to that address: A) Do not send .zip files, they will be blocked; renaming to .thisisazipfile is OK. B) Post a comment here when you have sent the email. I need to manually check that inbox.)

    Also, do you get…

After contacting your support today we narrowed it down to blackmagic drivers and mercury transmit causing the issue. If I turn off MT to my Intensity 4k the problem goes away. No issues with Premiere. Have contacted Blackmagic but no response yet.

It has done this already for years. Turn on motion blur on the layer and for the comp.

What additional features would you like to see in a bug reporting tool?

The UserVoice platform is a new tool (as of 2018) that Adobe DVA product teams are using to track user feedback, and allow public voting and commenting on suggestions. Prior to this, reports were not visible to the public, so no voting or discussion could occur on a given report.

Submissions to this site are reviewed by the Adobe DVA product teams. Not every submission will receive a response, but we are reading the submission and using the feedback in our planning process for future updates to After Effects, Premiere Pro, and our sibling applications. We’ve closed many submissions to this site as completed after a new update has been released, when the submission was addressed by the update. Other submissions are closed as not actionable, or declined, if the request does not align with our development…

Two reasons. Firstly, RAM preview tends to drop frames on first run through. Even on a timeline which is mostly cached when using spacebar to playback I will regularly experience dropped frames and audio glitches even on sections that are already in RAM. The extra process of moving things into RAM has a hit on performance.

Secondly, even on a system with 128GB RAM I am limited to around 150secs worth of RAM in a HD timeline. If AE played back from disk then you could conceivably cache 120mins worth of 4k using DNxHR using a 1TB spinny disk turning AE into software capable of onlining a feature.

    Chris Brearley commented  ·

Disk cache still has to go into ram as do any source files. Completely unnecessary. Don't know of any other video software that does this in the way that AE does.

    Hi Andrew,

your comments are as thoughtful as they are timely.
While I usually would have to close this item as it isn’t specific enough, I’m gonna leave it open so others can see this and add comments:

Please come back and vote for exactly the items that you feel need a V2, some polish, or just remove friction in areas that have grown over time. Add a new request if what you’d like to see revised isn’t discussed yet.

We’re already seeing good patterns on User Voice as to which items and areas would be good candidates for upcoming releases. You can see some of the top runners already marked as “Under Review”. And while that won’t tell you with which release exactly we’ll have things ready for you, it’s an indicator of an investment we’re making to improve features and workflows where most users express their needs.

    Cheers,…

Hi Adam, thank you for your interest in my post.

I've never been a fan of dynamic link. Constantly switching between apps for small tweaks is cumbersome, as is organising two projects at the same time for one output. It feels like I'm doing twice the work. I also experience Mercury Transmit issues where one app will take control of the output. This seems to change over the years depending on which version of CC and Blackmagic drivers but currently if I have Prem and AE open at the same time I only get the output from AE. Opening and shutting AE for tiny amends is so time consuming that it's quicker to just stay in AE and wait for things to cache.

I like your idea of permacache, I just don't think it takes things far enough. In a way it would be not too similar than just proxying comps with DPX. My main gripe here is that it still needs to go into RAM before playback. This is more to do with my other post which you might have seen where I don't believe RAM playback should be necessary any more. An OK SSD should be able to playback a 10bit DPX sequence, if not then there's nothing wrong with DNx 10/12bit.

When you say that AE is not focused on these things you are absolutely right. My argument is that it should be. Back in 1993 it would not have been feasible to get all this in under one app running on home hardware. Things have change dramatically. Modern hardware and coding has changed significantly and now AE should be capable of way more than what currently can do. Just look at the development of Resolve in the last few years. Autodesk added batch to Smoke, Lustre to Flame. The Foundry gave us NUKE Studio (pretty much the basis of what I would like to see happen to AE) and now there are software versions of traditional turnkey systems like Quantel Rio, edit and finishing all running on off-the-shelf hardware. Software is being merged and is capable of doing more than one thing.

    Adobe need to aim higher.
