    Hi Jan,

    Thank you for reporting this bug. We haven't been able to reproduce the render failure with compositions which contain the setup you've described. Would you be able to send or upload a project file that reproduces the issue?

    Also, what type of OS are you using and what display language is it set to?

    Post a link to your files here, or if you prefer not to post publicly you can send it to aebugs@adobe.com.

    If you send to that address:
    A) Do not send .zip files, they will be blocked; renaming to .thisisazipfile is OK.
    B) Post a comment here when you have sent the email. We'll need to manually check that inbox.

    Thanks Jan,
    - John, AE Quality Engineering

    Following up: I did find an array-shuffle function which works in both expression engines, adapted from this SO post: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/962802/is-it-correct-to-use-javascript-array-sort-method-for-shuffling

    Here is the code for AE, for using on a Source Text property:

    // Shuffle array elements //
    function shuffle( array ) {
    var tmp, current, top = array.length;

    if ( top ) while ( --top ) {
    current = Math.floor( random() * ( top + 1 ) );
    tmp = array[ current ];
    array[ current ] = array[ top ];
    array[ top ] = tmp;
    }

    return array;
    }

    shuffle( thisProperty.value.split( "" ) ).join( "" );
    // end code //

    Cheers,
    - John

    Hi Scott,

    Thank you for filing this bug. We are able to reproduce the same crash here and will be forwarding this report to the development team.

    It appears to only crash when using the Legacy ExtendScsript expression engine. If you switch to the JavaScript expression engine in Project Settings > Expressions, you will be able to use the expression as you've written it.

    Cheers,

    Hi Ludwig,

    Thank you for submitting this report. Sorry to see you're experiencing this issue. You are correct, there was a similar bug fixed in a previous version related to workspaces containing CEP panels.

    A bit more information would help us to track down the cause of this new issue. Could you please answer the following:

    • What OS and OS version are you using? E.g. macOS 10.14.6
    • What panels are a part of your custom workspace?
    • Is this issue consistent with a particular workspace?
    • When the crash occurs, have you submitted a crash report via the Crash Report dialog?
    • If you are not using the latest AE 17.0.2, what version are you using and does the issue occur if you update to 17.0.2?

    Thanks very much for any additional info,
    - John, After Effects Quality Engineering

    Hi Jan,

    Thanks for posting this request.

    The version number is the "16.1.3 ( build 5 )" displayed on the About screen, rather than the year of release. After Effects 2020 is version 17.0 and the latest update is 17.0.2.

    Cheers,

    Hi Al,

    Thanks so much for the update, I'm glad that those steps helped with the issue. It's nice when things work out that way. Thank you as well for the size information, that will be helpful as we're looking to identify the cause of any slowdown.

    Cheers,
    - John

    Hi Al,

    Would you mind posting the size of the .txt file at the following location?

    /Users/ ~username~ /Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/17.0/Adobe After Effects 17.0 Prefs.txt

    The modal slowness might be related to the size of that file, or the other .txt preferences files in the same location.

    Something to try: With After Effects closed, rename the "17.0" folder in the path above to anything else ( like "original 17.0 prefs" ). On the next launch, After Effects will create a fresh set of preferences in a new "17.0" folder. It may ask to migrate preferences from a previous version, please don't migrate them. Does the Preference modal still take a long time to appear with these fresh preferences?

    After following the above steps, you'll be able to close AE, delete the fresh preferences folder and rename your original folder back to "17.0" to restore your previous preferences.

    Please let me know if you're able to follow these steps, or if you have any additional questions.

    Thanks so much,
    - John

    Hi Otto,

    Have you tried separating dimensions on the Position property? This allows you to have separate keyframes / pick-whipped expressions for each of the dimensional items. You'll have X and Y for 2D layers, and X, Y, and Z for 3D layers. Right-click on the Position property to use the Separate Dimensions command.

    Please let me know if this is helpful, or if you had something else in mind.

    Hi George,

    This is John from the After Effects team. Would you be able to give a bit more information about what aspects of After Effects start to lag when you enable guides? Interaction, playback, or everything?

    Some system information would be helpful as well, is this on Windows or macOS? Is there a discrete GPU installed?

    Thanks George, sorry you're seeing this issue, I hope we can get to the bottom of it.

    Hi Johannes,

    This is John from the After Effects team. Sorry to see you're having this issue with SWF files on a server. If possible, providing some more details about your setup may help us to identify the source of the issue:

    - Is After Effects installed on Windows or macOS?
    - What type of server is being used? FTP, SMB, NAS, etc
    - Is this issue in the most recent version of After Effects & Animate? If so, was it working with a previous version?

    Thanks very much for any additional information you can provide,
    - John

    Hi Olivier,

    This is John from the After Effects team. Thank you for reporting this issue, sorry to hear you've had a crash.

    A few additional details would be helpful to us if you can provide them:
    - How many markers were on the null?
    - Is this on Windows or Mac?
    - Which version of After Effects were you using?

    Thanks so much! And like Paul mentioned below, please submit a crash via the Crash Reporter. Those reports and details are invaluable for us to find and fix crashes like yours.

    Thanks so much!

    Hi Aurelijus,

    This is John from the After Effects team. The behavior you've reported is related to how the Transform effect changes the name of the Scale property when Uniform Scale is checked or unchecked.

    To get around this issue, hold down Alt/Option when using the pickwhip to create a link to the Scale property of the Transform effect. The new expression link will use the index of the property instead of the name. For instance:

    `effect("Transform")("Scale")` will instead be created as `effect("Transform")(4)`

    This should prevent the error you're seeing. Please let us know if this is helpful or if you run into any other issues.

    Thanks so much!
    - John

    Hi Jack,

    This is John from the AE team, thanks for filing this report. Sorry to hear AE is crashing on save with this project. Have you tried importing the project into a new, blank project? This will bring in your project while "refreshing" the metadata surrounding it, which seems as though it may have become corrupt or damaged.

    It would be very helpful in this case if you could also send the project file so we could try to see what is causing the crash when saving.

    Thanks so much Jack,

    Hi all,

    Thank you for reporting this issue. This is John from the After Effects team, sorry to see you're all experiencing this crash.

    Would you all mind listing your hardware specs and OS? I suspect this crash is related to the GPU, but more details on your systems will help us to narrow it down and find the source of the problem.

    Thanks so much,
    - John, AE QE

    Hi Geechuen,

    Thank you for submitting this bug report. This is John from the AE team. We haven't been able to see the issue you're describing when rendering image sequences. Would you mind providing a few more details?

    • Are you seeing this issue on Windows or macOS? And on what OS version?

    • What type of an image sequence are you exporting?

    • Are you using the built-in Render Settings/Output Modules or using your own?

    • When you click on the Render Settings in the Render Queue, what do you see listed for Start, End, and Duration on the lower right? Is anything modified in the "Custom Time Span" dialog, which comes up when you click the "Custom" button?

    Thanks so much for any additional information,
    - John

    Hi Garrett,

    Thank you for filing this report. It sounds like you may have a corrupted project or possibly corrupt preferences. There is also a shortcut for switching the timeline time display which may help as well.

    • While holding Cmd ( Mac ) or Ctrl ( Win ), click where the frames are displayed in the upper-left corner of the timeline. This is the shortcut for switching the display setting without going into the Project Settings.

    • If this behavior is only in a certain project, try importing the current project into a new one by dragging the .aep into the Project panel of an empty project.

    • If neither of the above work, try resetting your preferences by either holding Cmd+Opt+Shift ( Mac ) or Ctrl+Alt+Shift ( Win ) while launching After Effects.

    Alternatively, you could reveal the preferences on your system via the Preferences > General > Reveal Preferences in... button and simply move them to another location. In either case, After Effects will generate fresh preferences. The benefit of moving them your custom preferences is that they aren't entirely lost, you could move them back if the fresh preferences doesn't fix the issue.

    Please let me know if any of these options help with the issue.

    Cheers,
    - John, AE QE

    Hi there,

    This appears to be related to value clamping on the Offset property of the Exposure effect.

    While the value returned from "thisProperty.propertyIndex" is "4", the property itself is limited to numbers between -2 and 2, so the expression value becomes limited to 2.

    What is the desired creative outcome of the expression? Perhaps there is another method to reach your goal.

    Thanks,

    - John, AE QE
