    Hi Dillon,

Thank you for reporting this issue. We are able to reproduce it as well with the steps you provided ( thanks for those! ). We will be taking a look at possible causes and solutions.

In the meantime, a workaround is to add ".value" to the end of the property reference e.g. "transform.position.value" or, if the expression is referring to its own property as in your example, simply use "value" by itself to achieve posterization of the pre-expression keyframed values.

Thanks again for reporting this bug,

    Hi Javeed,

Thank you for reporting this issue. We can see the same error when pick whipping to the Direction property of Advanced Lighting and will get a bug ticket filed internally.

In the meantime, there is the workaround of using the index of the property rather than the name. To do this, hold the Alt/Option modifier key while releasing the pick whip. This will create an expression link that works just like the name and avoids the bug while we investigate a solution.

Thank you again for reporting this issue!

    Hi Omri,

Thank you for reporting this issue. What version of After Effects is affected and what OS are you running? If you can capture and share a screen recording of the random windows opening and closing when you use the shortcut, it would be extremely helpful in identifying what is going wrong.

Thanks very much for any additional information,

Thank you for reporting this issue. I've downloaded your project and the lightbulb.jpg, but applying Key Cleaner does not cause a crash in AE version 17.6 ( the latest as of this post ) on either Windows or macOS. Is this the same version of AE that you are using? If not, which version of AE is crashing on your system and which OS are you using?

Thanks very much for any additional information,

    Hi Linus,
Thank you for reporting this issue. After opening your .aep, I wasn't able to see any render differences between the 17.6 Beta and 16.1.3 ( CC 2019 ) while changing the project bit depth and toggling on the Offset effect.

Would you be able to provide screenshots of the difference between 17.x and 16.1.3?

Thanks so much for any additional info,

    Hi Pieter,

Thank you for reporting this problem. I hear your frustration with these extreme performance issues and I hope we can track down what is causing them. Our testing team here is not experiencing these same issues, but there are many variables that could be causing them.

    - What are your system specs? OS version, hardware, RAM, GPU, etc.
    - What third-party plug-ins or panels do you have installed? Are they all updated to their latest version?
    - Did the performance problems start with a certain version of After Effects? Does the latest Beta exhibit the same problems?

Thanks in advance for any additional information you can provide,
    - John, After Effects Engineering Team

    Hi Florian,

Thank you for reporting this issue, and our apologies for the long delay in responding. Is this issue still persisting in the latest version of After Effects? It looks like some pixel data might be "stuck", possibly due to a GPU issue. Does the odd smear persist after rebooting the machine?

Please let us know if you are still experiencing this in the latest version.

    Thanks again,

    Hi Alejandra,

Thank you for reporting this crash, sorry you're experiencing this issue. Would you mind answering a few additional questions to help us identify the cause?

    - What are your system's specs? E.g. OS version, GPU, amount of RAM
    - What version of After Effects are you using?
    - Does the crash occur only with certain footage or all footage?
    - Does the crash occur only with the project set to a certain color bit depth like 8bpc or 32bpc?

If the Crash Reporter dialog is shown after the crash occurs, please be sure to submit it with your email address and what you were doing when the application crashed.

I hope we are able to get to the source of this. Thank you for any additional info you can provide!

    Hi Charlie,

This bug has been fixed in the latest Beta builds. Please take a look at Beta builds with a version of 17.5.1.37 or higher and let us know if you are still experiencing the issue.

    Cheers,
    - John, After Effects Engineering

    Hi Andrei,

Thank you for submitting these issues. To address each separately:

In your example screen shot with the expressions, you are adding a wiggled Slider value ( a single number ) to a Scale value ( which is an array of two numbers ). Expressions automatically convert the values to match in this case, so "transform.scale + effect("Wiggler 2")("Slider")" becomes "[100,100] + [ 12, 0 ]". The X and Y values are added separately, similar to your topmost expression, but the Y value for the Slider is 0 because only a single number was given.

If you apply the wiggle() expression within the Scale property, rather than linking it to a wiggled Slider, it will automatically return an array of two different values. If you want to have a wiggled expression controller, perhaps to link multiple properties up, you should use a Point Control instead of a Slider so that the number of values/array length matches up.

The issues you are seeing with the Threshold effect is related to its implementation; in the UI, the values shown correspond to the project bit-depth by default. So 0-255 is shown for 8bit, 0 - 32,768 for 16bit, and 0 - 1 ( floating-point ) for 32bit. However, the expression value is always in 32bit and therefore from 0 - 1.

We will get a ticket filed for this internally for evaluation, as I can see how this would be confusing. A workaround which will work in AE today would be to set the Color Display preference in the Info panel's context menu ( the three lines aka "hamburger menu ) to "Decimal (0.0 - 1.0 )". This will cause the Threshold's Level property to always show the floating-point value instead of the 8bit or 16bit value, regardless of the project setting.

Thank you again for your feedback on both of these issues. I hope the explanations above are helpful, but please feel free to ask any additional questions.

    Cheers,
    - John, After Effects Engineering Team

    Hi Joe,

Thank you for reporting this issue. Would you be able to list the steps used to cook the previous version if you don't clear the cache? Do you experience this while rendering from the Render Queue or from AME? And what are your systems specs?

Thanks very much for any additional information,

    Hi Jakub,

Thank you for reporting this bug, that definitely sounds frustrating. We are aware of a similar issue with Premiere sequences used in the After Effects' Timeline, do you have any Premiere sequences in your project? Does the issue show up in the every project or only certain projects?

If possible, a screen recording of After Effects showing the buggy behavior would be the best for us to diagnose what is going wrong.

Thanks so much for any additional information,

    Hi Paula,

Thank you for reporting this issue. The engineering team is aware of this problem and it unfortunately affects importing the same JPEGs into Premiere as well.

If a fix becomes available, it will first be available in the Beta builds, which are available in the CC app in the Beta Apps section. Inside After Effects, click on the "What's New" flash in the upper-right to see the fixes which have recently been made.

Thank you again for reporting this issue,

    Hi Cameron,

Thank you for making this report, you definitely should not be seeing crashes in AE 17.1.3 every 10 minutes. We are not aware of any specific issues causing such frequent crashes in that version of AE.

If possible, would you be willing to answer a few questions about your setup and the crashes you're experiencing?

    - What version of macOS are you using?
    - What are the full system specs on your iMac? GPU, model, etc
    - Is the crash always triggered by a specific action?
    - When the crash occurs, does the Crash Reporter show up? If so, have you submitted these crash reports?
    - Do crashes occur in only one specific project or in all projects?

You mentioned copy/pasting timecode; what program are you copying the text from? There is a possibility that a special character in the text might be contributing to the crashes.

Thank you so much for any additional information, I hope we are able to get to the bottom of these crashes.

    Hi Qing Li,

Thank you for submitting this feature request. The Roto Brush tool can paint selection strokes along straight lines by holding Shift and clicking without dragging; this will draw a straight stroke from the end of your previous stroke to current brush position.

Keep in mind that the Roto Brush selection detects edges and does not take the specific shape of a selection into account ( because this shape could change over time due to movement, perspective change, etc). Be sure to keep as many strokes as possible in the middle of the selection and do not draw around the outline unless necessary.

If the subject or object you are selecting with Roto Brush is rigid within the shot, you might also try playing with the stroke duration in the Timeline, possibly keyframing the position of the stroke to give Roto Brush the same starting selection each time.

    Cheers,

    Hi Marc,

Thank you for reporting this issue. That is definitely an annoying bug. How often do you see this occurring? I notice from the screengrab that you have the compositions docked at the top of the window ( or possibly used tilde to maximize the Timeline ), do you dock your panel this way often and does the spacing issue occur if you have the Timelines docked elsewhere?

If possible, a screen recording of how the extra spacing is created would be the most helpful as we try to find the fix for it.

Thanks again for reporting and for any additional information.

    Hi Julio,

Thank you for reporting this bug. This feature was not intentionally removed; the fix which restores the double-click functionality is now available in the After Effects (Beta) build in the CC app. Please try out the Beta builds and let us know if the issue is also showing as fixed for you.

    Hi Ardi,

Thank you for reporting this issue. Would you mind providing more details about your system? What OS and what version of After Effects is showing this problem?

Something you might try: see if switching the Default Output in Preferences > Audio Hardware when you are not able to playback will allow the Space/Numpad 0 to work again.

    Thanks,

    Hi Ryan,

As Steve already pointed on, adding properties ( including expression controls ) to the Essential Graphics panel also makes them available as Master Properties on instances of that composition as a pre-comp. You can also then "push" new values into the original comp ( and all unmodified instances ) with the Push button next to the Master Properties, or "pull" the original value if you've changed it with the Pull button. Lots of possibilities!

School of Motion did a great write-up on Master Properties as well: https://www.schoolofmotion.com/blog/master-properties-after-effects/

    Cheers,
