    Hi all,

Thank you all for your feedback on these playback performance issues. As you may have seen, the latest update to After Effects 2022 ( 22.3 ) brings native support for Apple silicon to the release version. While we are not considering this playback performance issue fixed yet, but we do need some clarity around the exact conditions that can cause the playback performance to degrade, given that it appears to have originally been reported against After Effects running under Rosetta. With that in mind, please do the following:

If you have been running into slow previews while using After Effects 22.2.1 or earlier on Apple silicon under Rosetta, please update to 22.3 and see if the playback issues persist when you run After Effects natively. Let us know with a comment whether you continue to see any playback issues when running After Effects natively or under Rosetta.

    If…

    Daniel, Gerdon, & Lars,
Are all of you of experiencing the poor playback when running After Effects natively or under Rosetta? For those of you who haven't tried yet, does the workaround described by David B ( matching the colorspace of your footage ) make any difference?

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further info,
    - John, After Effects Engineering Team

Thanks for that follow-up, David B. We have a bug on the slowdown under Rosetta with mismatches color profiles and our engineers are investigating.

    Hi David,

Thank you for all that additional background information. We've tried playback of various footage ( including H.264, ProRes, and ProRes 4444 ) on several M1 machines ( M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max ) and we are unable to reproduce the slowdown you're experiencing when running under Rosetta.

Some additional things to try that may shed light on what is occurring. When running under Rosetta:
    - Do you experience this slowdown with playback that doesn't involve footage?
    - Both of the formats you've mentioned are hardware decoded by default. Does disabling hardware decode in preferences > Import have any effect?
    - Is the footage located on a local disk, external hard drive, or network drive?
    - Are you using an external monitor? If so, is there any different when using the laptop screen only?
    - Is playback of the same clips also slow in Premiere when running under Rosetta?

If none of the above factors make a difference, could we reach out to you via email for further investigation?

Thanks again for the information and for any other you can provide,
    - John, After Effects Engineering Team

    Hi Teague & Sebastian,

Thank you both for reporting this issue. Just to confirm, are you both running the December release of After Effects 22.1.1?

Additionally, what kind of media ( if any ) is present in your project? Do you see the preview slowdown in all projects/compositions, or only in certain ones?

The release version of After Effects mentioned above runs under Rosetta emulation on Apple M1 devices. There is a Beta version of After Effects that runs natively instead, which is available in the Beta section of the Creative Cloud Desktop app. If you can, please give the Beta version of After Effects a try and let us know if the preview issues are still present.

Thanks again for the report and for any further information,
    - John, After Effects Engineering Team

    Hi Drew,

Thanks for making this report, sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue after restarting your Mac. Could you offer more detail about what you're experiencing as "all the plugins become unresponsive"? Is this during plug-in loading while After Effects starts or when you try to apply a plug-in while working on a project?

Additionally, please let us know which version of After Effects you are using ( visible in the About box under Adobe After Effects > About After Effects... ) and which version of macOS, as well as the specs of your machine.

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,

    Hi Jesper,

Thank you for reporting this issue. Could you provide an example of an expression that is throwing the error? In the Project Settings, are you using the JavaScript expression engine or the Legacy ExtendScript engine?

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,

    Hi Seb,

Thanks for making this request. The Live Link for Maya plug-in is developed by Autodesk, so any updates would need to come from them. I'm unsure if Autodesk has a feedback platform similar to UserVoice, but they do have a Contact page and user forums:
    - https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya/ct-p/area-c2

    Cheers,

    Hi Jonathan, Michel, & Luis,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue as well. Would any of you be able to provide a PSD file that causes After Effects to crash? We are investigating this issue, but have been unable to reproduce it on our end thus far.

Luis' comment about removing preferences does provide a clue that the issue may lie in the preferences, rather than in the PSDs themselves. If possible, could any of you share your application preferences with us? To find them, open the General section of the Preferences, then click "Reveal in Finder/Explorer" to show a "22.4" folder. Please zip that folder up and post a link to the file here, or if you prefer not to post publicly you can send it to aebugs@adobe.com.

If you send it to that address:
    A) Do not send .zip files, they will be blocked; renaming to .thisisazipfile is OK.
    B) Post a comment here when you have sent the email. We'll need to manually check that inbox.

It is also possible that resetting the preferences may help you avoid the crash. To do so, hold down Cmd+Option+Shift ( on Mac ) or Ctrl+Alt+Shift ( on Win ) during app launch. If this does allow you to import PSDs, please let us know that as well.

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,
    - John, After Effects Engineering Team

    Hi Leslie and Ven,

Thank you both very much for reporting this issue. Would either of you be able to submit a PSD file that causes the long hang/crash? Additionally,

    - Does any PSD cause the crash, or only certain ones?
    - What operating system/version are you using?

Thanks very much for any additional information you can provide,

    Hi Constantin,

Thank you for reporting this issue. We have not been able to reproduce it in-house, but we are aware of other customers also experiencing it. If possible, could you provide the following information to help us diagnose what might be going on:

    - What OS version are you using?
    - What language is being used in After Effects and does it match the OS language?
    - Have you tried resetting AE's preferences entirely?

There was an issue in 22.2 where preferences were not being correctly written out when After Effects closed, but it was quickly fixed in a patch ( 22.2.1 ). If your preferences were corrupted by that release and not reset since then, you might be working with a corrupt set of preferences that After Effects continues to have a hard time with. If you haven't already, please try completely removing the preferences folder ( 22.3 ) and see if the issue persists.

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,
    - John, After Effects Engineering Team

    Hi Tristan,

I have to admit, 10 years back is before my time on the team. I checked in After Effects 11 ( CS6 ) but still couldn't open multiple comps by double-clicking them in the RQ, so consider this an official feature request. It may have worked in a prior version, but it must have been before my time in a pre-CS6 version.

Could you describe more about the "going back to previous comp when closing a comp"? This also sounds like it might have been before my time. We do strive not to take away functionality, but a lot has changed in After Effects in the last decade and there may have been technical reasons for that feature to be removed, though they aren't always communicated well to all customers.

Regarding the render location bug, is that having to do with render tokens or the file browsing window opening to an unwanted location?

For reference, this is a report of the token issue: https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911311/suggestions/36084937

And here is a request always opening the file browser to the location of the project: https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911311/suggestions/34493974

    Thanks again,
    - John, After Effects Engineering Team

    Hi Tristan,

Thank you for making this bug report. Could you provide a screen recording from a previous version of After Effects showing the functionality you're describing when double-clicking comps in the Render Queue? In previous versions, we aren't able to double-click to open multiple comps consistently, so there might have been an existing issue that was made worse in a recent update.

Regarding the issue of the Effects panel no longer opening when a layer is double-clicked, could you clarify if you mean the Effect Controls panel or Effects & Presets panel? We are not able to see either of those panels opening when double-clicking a layer to open it in the Layer panel in previous versions. There was a bug fixed recently where the Effect Controls panel was not opening when an effect was applied to a layer, is that perhaps what you are referring to? This was fixed in After Effects 22.3.

Thank again for reporting these issues and for any further information you can provide,
    - John, After Effects Engineering Team

    Hi Dokun,

Thank you for reporting this issue, and sorry to hear you've been having a such a poor experience with After Effects on your PC. It sounds like there could be a driver issue or possibly an issue with a third-party plug-in that is causing a general slowdown of the UI. To try and help with issues in those areas:

    - Could you list any third-party plug-ins, scripts, or panels you have installed?
    - What version are the drivers for your RTX 2060? And are they the Studio or Gamer Ready?

Additionally, a screen recording on the slow UI interaction would be very helpful, as well as showing what other processes are running in the Task Manager while After Effects is open.

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,

    Hi all,

Thank you for reporting this issue. As mentioned by Douglas Waterfall in the comments below, a fix for this issue is available in After Effects (Beta) build 42 or later. Please download the latest Beta from the Creative Cloud app and let us know if the fix is working for you as well.

If you do experience any issues with After Effects (Beta), please report them on the Beta forums that are accessible via "Report a bug..." or "Visit the community..." when you click on the Provide Feedback button ( which looks like a speech bubble ) in the upper-right corner of the After Effects (Beta) UI.

Thank you again for reporting this issue,

    Hi Frederic,

Thank you for reporting this issue. After creating a project matching your screenshots by copying the CC Toner effect via Copy with Relative Property links, we could not reproduce the behavior you've reported; only 8 expression errors were shown, and there was no crash when deleting the CC Toner effect on the second Shape layer.

If possible, could you share this project with us or provide the steps to recreate the buggy behavior? Also, what version of After Effects and what OS are you currently using?

Thanks again for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,
