    Hello everybody!

(This post was co-authored by Tim Kurkoski (After Effects Product Owner), Andrew Cheyne (After Effects Engineering Manager), and Victoria Nece (After Effects Product Manager).)

This thread has been sitting here for quite a while without a response. To start, we want to apologize for that. We haven’t been ignoring you or your feedback – this is just a particularly complex topic. That said, it’s time for us to check in with you, clarify a few things, and give you an idea of what we’re looking at for the future of After Effects, especially when it comes to performance.

To start, we fully understand that you want After Effects to be as fast as it can be – utilizing your computer’s hardware resources to render as fast as possible. Over the last several years, we have been working on the performance of After Effects constantly. Sometimes those performance gains…

Sounds like it's finally going in the right direction. AMD's core offensive is forcing you to improve After Effects multi-core support. We use AWS Deadline 10 to render our projects with After Effects. Here we let each computer run up to 16 instances of After Effects in parallel on one machine. Why? We use an enormous number of expressions. The GPU is of no use there. Here often only 1 single core is used. Professional projects often require many expressions. Here we have up to 16x more render power with an AMD 2990WX compared to rendering a preview in the After Effects GUI while working. Furthermore we often deactivate the GPU renderer and switch to CPU. Why? With 8K RED recordings and many effects the GPU memory is often not sufficient anymore. Even on a 2080Ti After Effects crashes. So from our point of view the focus on GPU is currently only useful for smaller projects. Especially large projects with large footage suffer enormously from your decision since CC2014 not to offer multi-core support anymore for preview rendering. A short number for comparison. With 30 computers and AWS Deadline we can render 300x faster than a preview can be generated while working on the project. This is where After Effects gives away its potential and this is where we waste time on projects. With 15 years of experience as a VFX supervisor, I can only say that I'm wasting about 60% of my time waiting in After Effects (because of unused power). Here must be improvement. Many professional colleagues, especially freelancers, are already switching in some areas to software from Blackmagic and co. Make sure that your software remains attractive for real professionals. Thanks a lot!

    Hello,
sadly until now we only tested CC 2018 latest. If this was fixed in the CC 2019 its time to give the update in our Renderfarm a try. Sounds great! I will test it.

The point here is that After Effects cannot run as a service under Windows. Normally you start your computer, log in to Windows and start After Effects. However, if you use a render farm, the computer starts automatically. Nobody logs in, but After Effects is started by software like AWS Deadline (formerly Thinkbox). However, this service runs with appropriate user rights, but without a person having to log in under Windows. In practice, our workstations start and the computers must automatically start After Effects. Unfortunately, this is not possible because After Effects crashes directly when you start it that way. Software like 3dsMax, Maya, Cinema4D etc. can do this. Yes even Paint. I can't think of a **** program that can't. Unfortunately, the DSGVO stipulates that every computer needs password protection. Since After Effects only starts when you are logged in to your computer, this is not possible.

The Creative Cloud registration is not necessary, because Adobe provides the After Effects Render Engine.

With the file ae_render_only_node.txt After Effects starts in Render Engine mode even without login.

    https://blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/installing-after-effects-cc-render-engines-with-adobe-creative-cloud/

Basically, After Effects only has to start in a "run as a service" environment.

No I mean realy wothout a login to windows. Try to launch AfterEffects as a sheduled task after Windows started and no one logged in into Windows. After Effects crashes instant, but to use it in a render farm enviroment where even the workstations had to render (when no body is logged in) it is essential. Since the new laws it is not possible to auto login to windows anymore without entering a password.

You can use Alt+Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to copy a Effect binded to the „mother effects“

Hey what are your specs of SAN and Network? We have build up a server with 44 TB SSD as a raid6 and all workstations have 10 GbE. Its now nearly faster then a local SSD. I know that After Effects and Premiere addressing very small blocks like 4kb to read files. With normal hard drives its not very performant at all especially over network and multible acesses from different users.

I think adobe had to increase performance and stability on computer first before coding some sensless mobile app more. I have 4 displays to use After Effects the best way and I think working on a small phone is a pain and a waste of time...
