    Hello,

Is the 'Disable video output when in background' box checked or unchecked?

    Thanks,

This feature exists in Premiere Pro 13.1.3 and above. It is accessed by opening the Captions Import Setting window in the Caption Block.

You will need to use the Caption Settings dialog located in the Captions Inspector. You can set caption styling import settings there.

This is a known issue and in the design queue. You can work around this by starting with a larger type size and modifying the object size.

AdminAdobe Staff - Nate (Admin, Adobe DVA) commented  ·

    Hello Darren,

First off, sorry you are having a less than enjoyable experience with Open Captions. At the time Open Captions were implemented it was to support single stream film subtitling. As you probably know, open captions have become a much more stream intensive (mostly for social media and translations), long story short, this issue is known to us and in need of some redesign.

Thanks for the feedback, though, getting customers to describe their frustration makes it easier to convince people captions need more work.

The workaround for when you get into this state is to copy and paste the timeline into a new matching project then re-add the caption track.

Yes, super annoying and yes we need to fix it, but hopefully this will get you out of the woods on this project.

    Cheers,

    Nate

PS - the rendering for Open Captions is rough as well. The workaround is to create at a larger font size, select all captions and make them smaller, the edges render better.

If you have more questions, email me at mcfadden@adobe.com.

What version of Premiere are you using? 13.1.3 and later versions have this feature. It is in the captions styling window. (In the Captions Panel, click the 'Import Settings' button.

Is this still occurring for you in 13.1.5, Markus? We did fix a few frame shift bugs. Thanks.

AdminAdobe Staff - Nate (Admin, Adobe DVA) commented  ·

I would only need the caption file, not the project, but I understand. What caption format did you import? Or did you author it?

AdminAdobe Staff - Nate (Admin, Adobe DVA) commented  ·

    Hello Markus,

Sorry to hear you are having an issue. What format/framerate are you editing? What format are the captions?

If you want to send me the project file https://www.facebook.com/PremiereNate I would be glad to take a look. I cannot reproduce from scratch, so it would make it easiest to see what the difference is.

    Thanks!

PS - we did add a new parser logic to read incorrectly formatted files, so it should work regardless now.

AdminAdobe Staff - Nate (Admin, Adobe DVA) commented  ·

The files (created and downloaded from YouTube) are missing the UTF-8 indicator, so Premiere reads it as ASCII text. If you open the files in notepad and save as with UTF8 option, they are read correctly.

    Thanks for your help!

Hello Mr. Matson, this is working for me, so if you could give me some more details it would help. What is your system configuration? Also do you have an .STL file you could send me?

    Message it to https://www.facebook.com/PremiereNate

    Thanks!

    Hello,

I haven't seen this bug before. Can you send me a copy of the project file? My email is mcfadden@adobe.com

I don't need any of the video assets, but can you send the SRT file?

    Thanks.

FYI @Joao - Bold and Italic with caption edging has been fixed in our upcoming release.

FYI @Julie - The transparency issues with 608 backgrounds has been fixed

It was because users like you took the time to give feedback that these bugs got fixed. Captions are not a super exciting feature, so I rely on our users to keep pressure on the team to fix this stuff. Thank you for reaching out and making sure we knew how much you cared.

    Cheers!

    Nate

    Hello Jef,

Sorry you haven't been satisfied with the Caption Panel. I have spent the better part of two years trying to fix/implement behaviors that will make it better. If you have a few specific pain points, I can help more.

I do read all of this and it does lead to actions by the development team!

AdminAdobe Staff - Nate (Admin, Adobe DVA) commented  ·

    @Joao

There Bold and Italic do not work with open caption edging, this has been added to the feature backlog. Sorry for the frustration.

    Thanks,

    Nate

    @Julie

Send me your project to https://www.facebook.com/PremiereNate and I can take a look. There is a known issue with some projects not showing the black background. It is a simulation bug and the actual background will be there for closed caption playback to broadcast.

    1. were the captions imported or authored in Premiere?
    2. If imported, what is the format of the caption file? Where did you get it?

    Thanks!

    Nate

AdminAdobe Staff - Nate (Admin, Adobe DVA) commented  ·

    Hello Christian,

The enhancement you mention is in the database for future consideration. Thanks for your feedback.

If you have time, what sort of bugs do you see cutting the captions container or using multiple captions files?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, eikonoklastes. As always, your feedback is spot on. These are all known issues to the team and in varying stages of development. Thanks again.

In the future feel free to email me, mcfadden@adobe.com with your concerns, I will see it faster than on uservoice.

    Thanks,

    Nate

Thanks again for the feedback. We have made sure to have created items in our database for all actionable items. We are hoping you will be pleased by some of the changes we have made in future releases. Please continue to engage with us.

Note that in the future, while this list is awesome, it is much easier for us to change status on completed items if they are single entry.

We may close this one eventually but will keep the other individually tracked items open with status

    @Matt Young

    Mr. Young,

I need some more specifics from you if possible. What format/codec are you editing. I have tried multiple formats/codecs to attempt to reproduce what you are seeing. I am missing some information to specifically target the failure case you are experiencing.

    I need the following information:

    Codec
    Frame Size
    Wrapper Format
    Are you using Smart Render?

The easiest and most efficient way to resolve this is to send me your project. I have discovered/written many bugs on this specific failure case. Clearly, there is still one that needs resolution. I appreciate your time spent writing steps. That does help but I am not seeing what you are seeing.

    Thanks,

    Nate

    Hello,

For H.264, using sidecar formats is the recommended workflow. That is how current YouTube captioning works.

    Thanks for reaching out.

Hello, I have added this format to the back log of requested formats. To clarify this is line 21 VANC encoding and not 'embedding'. Embedding is done at the video wrapper level. The options for embedded captions are:

    AS-10
    AS-11
    DNxHR/DNxHD
    JPEG2000 MXF OP1a
    MXF OP1a
    QuickTime (608 Only)

    Thanks for the feedback.

Also, what format of Captions are you using? Doing two layers of Captions will create two streams and that is not a recommended workflow.

    Hello Marios,

Sorry to hear you are having a hard time with captions. If you send me the project, no media needed, I'll take a look.

    Thanks.

The up and down keys do this in the caption block. Are you referring to the timeline? If so this is an existing feature request. Thanks for reaching out.

Thanks, we will keep this mind for future versions. I suggest increasing the height of the caption track.
