Also, here are the presets: The only difference is that on the second one, I also included a "Levels" effect, which seems to have forced AE to actually save the data from the Saber plugin.

Thank you for filing this report.

To understand how After Effects is getting into this crashing condition, we need to profile what it’s doing when it crashes.

The easiest way is if you could send us your project so we could attempt to recreate the crash ourselves.

David, do I have your permission to contact you via the email address provided on this site?

Yes go ahead. Update for you though, I switched to Nvidia's Game-Ready Drivers and the problem seems to have stopped, though I've only been working for another forty minutes so no guarantee.

(Though interestingly, with Game-Ready drivers the GPU use averages around 30% instead of 15% when working, so clearly the Studio Drivers seem better with AE...)

    Thanks for looking into this.

    Thanks for posting this report.

Our devs looked at your screenshot, and this looks like a case where your GPU is running out of memory. Normally we expect After Effects to self-manage in this situation, or at least to give a better error message, so we do consider this a bug.

To diagnose this further, we need your help. We need more information about your hardware and how After Effects got into this situation. Could you please tell us:
    - About your GPU. Manufacturer, model, VRAM, and driver version.
    - Does the problem persist if you restart After Effects, or failing that, when you restart the computer?
    - What other apps do you have running at the same time? Does the problem occur if you quit them all? (Including web browsers, which are notorious for consuming VRAM.)

Happened to me with a 2080ti.

Not an extraordinary amount of layers/effects, but it seemed to happen at the same place each time. Extremely reproducible.

I moved on from it, so I can't post it, but if memory serves, I was using the C4D renderer with draft 3d enabled.

April 2021 and it's STILL an issue. But Ben Howard's workaround worked for me. Rename the folder CONTENTS to CONTENT.

Don't know much about programming, but certainly this can't be such a difficult thing for Adobe to patch...

I know this isn't the most popular opinion, but speaking from my perspective as a projection designer for opera & theatre, having an at-a-glance way of seeing the possible offshoots a new effect I'm not as familiar with was something I used to rely on. It was certainly a feature geared towards novices, but that's exactly why it was invaluable.
