Hi Victoria! I'm not sure. Maybe it's more set up as sort of a global variable for the comp. Right click, Make Master Property or something like that, and name it in a modal?

After that, anything could tie into it using that variable name, and it would also trickle down through subcomps. Maybe those other attributes could be a part of that global variable class. So you could have thisComp.mProp('Amplitude').layerName or thisComp.mProp('Amplitude').parentComp if you need that information. I'm not sure it'd be needed, but I'll never complain about having access to more things. :)

In my current case, I'm making a subcomp with a matte that can be resized using a property but it's going to be a few layers deep, so I need to pass that property through a few different comps. I guess I could just tie into a value the old school way, but I'm not quite sure how that might work with Master Properties, plus I might want to use the subcomp in other ways later on.

    Hello everybody!

(This post was co-authored by Tim Kurkoski (After Effects Product Owner), Andrew Cheyne (After Effects Engineering Manager), and Victoria Nece (After Effects Product Manager).)

This thread has been sitting here for quite a while without a response. To start, we want to apologize for that. We haven’t been ignoring you or your feedback – this is just a particularly complex topic. That said, it’s time for us to check in with you, clarify a few things, and give you an idea of what we’re looking at for the future of After Effects, especially when it comes to performance.

To start, we fully understand that you want After Effects to be as fast as it can be – utilizing your computer’s hardware resources to render as fast as possible. Over the last several years, we have been working on the performance of After Effects constantly. Sometimes those performance gains…

    And DOF.

YES. Also, adding blending modes for C4D rendered layers would be nice too.

And maybe get some workspace syncing while we're at it!

I had a similar problem around the time of this posting. This time it worked for me.

But I'd like to add that even when you get sync working, output modules never do. I had an error where AE said it couldn't sync because a device didn't exist—which only threw an error when I opened and closed preferences. It turns out, if you have a different audio device set up when you upload prefs it will fail if that device doesn't exist on the machine that's being synced. That makes no sense. Hardware prefs shouldn't sync or should fail gracefully if that hardware can't be found. Everything else should work.

While this would be nice, you can click on anything in the project window to protect it before you reduce—for example the comp you want to keep and the JSON file powering it. You have to do it every time you reduce so it's not as useful, but you can select more than one thing when you reduce.

That said, that would be a nice feature so I could reduce without as much forethought and checking after.

I figured out how to explain this more easily. Master Property keys on a layer apply inside the comp first THEN are remapped in the main comp. So in the main comp, where you can see all of those keys, it makes absolutely no sense because Master Property keys can apply to a completely different timeline.

I'm on 15.1.2 on Mac OS X, both Sierra and High Sierra. On a MBP and a Hackintosh so it's either OS or all AE versions. Due to how it exhibits, I'd say it's probably a bug in all versions.
