We hear your frustrations about color management and we are working on multiple improvements.

I recently posted a note on Alister Chapman's excellent xdcam-user.com forum, in response to a post he'd made about color management in Premiere Pro.

While my response doesn't go into details on our long term plans, it describes what we're doing in the short term to make handling of log footage easier.

    Here's what I wrote:

    Hi all,

I’m a product manager at Adobe, on the video team. I thought I’d chime in to provide some info on what we’re doing.

Color management is not going away – quite the opposite. As HDR-capable cameras and displays are becoming the default, and shooting in log or raw is becoming the norm, color management is critical. Gone are the days of only Rec709, the one color space to rule them all.

You might have seen reports about HDR…

Anthony, I can see you found my original report! Just so other people can easily find it, it's here:

This is exactly the same as I reported with the original M1 MacMini and seems to be an Apple flaw, possibly in hardware. Encoding using Apple's Compressor also gives the same poor results. Both programs use the same Apple Video Toolbox API.

Update: This problem also happens with AU and VST3 plug-ins, not just VST. It seems to happen with any plug-in that's not native to Premiere.

    Hi Abhishek

This happens the same on multiple machines, but if you want a flavour:
    MacPro with RX580
    iMac with Radeon Pro 580
2018 MacBook Pro with Radeon Pro 555X

I've attached a preset but it will also exhibit the problem with "Same as source" if you have a 2160p60 timeline. The second Level 5.2 is selected it goes to software rendering and it's clearly doing a two pass encode even though single pass is selected.

    Thanks
    Andy

This is a crucial workflow for things like quick turn-around sport. It's something I use a lot. Couldn't do F1 coverage without it.

Had this error a lot when trying to export today. It often happens when exporting ProRes (HQ) but not when exporting ProRes. When the error came up the resultant files had issues such as frames in the wrong order.

Currently, Premiere uses the Lanczos method for intrinsic scale and rotation. Lanczos is an exceptionally high-quality interpolation method which generally yields better results than bicubic, bilinear or nearest neighbor. From reading the forum post, it seems that up-scaling is the real issue here. I suggest looking at the Detail-Preserving Upscale effect in After Effects. It does a really good job and gives you some parameters to tweak to fit your specific content.

This would be a big time saver. Maybe if the source waveforms could be in their own window then we could place them wherever we liked.

This is also happening with ProRes 4444 files. A very similar problem has been found with After Effects cc2019. Sequence settings options seem to affect things. Checking "composite in linear color" can change things. As can deselecting "maximum bit depth"

    Hi Florian,

while this is a rather critical and large change to the way the application works and will take some time to be implemented, we’ll definitely put this under consideration.

There’s more than one solution to this problem, though.

A good short term opportunity is to use the parallel install feature in the creative cloud application. It should help to at least take away some of the issues working with people on a different version of the application.

Another thing worth keeping in mind is that you can install CC on two different machines (if you’re on an individual subscription). That gives you additional opportunity to keep different versions around for compatibility reasons.

I’ll update the status of this request as we move along.

If you have further thoughts on this matter, please keep them coming.

    Thanks
    Patrick
