    I know it's not exactly the same, but a couple releases ago they did add a close gap command. By default it closes every single gap in the timeline (not useful for me) but you can lasso select a bunch of clips and it'll close all the gaps, which I do find useful.
    I do miss the functionality you describe though, ripple delete requites the gap to be selected in order to work, in my experience.
