Check out the public beta for After Effects and Premiere Pro. The feature is currently in development and they need our feedback.

What are you wanting to twirl it open to? E is effects and EE is expressions. Again, it's not what's right under the mouse; you have to select a layer first, but it might be a step in the direction you want to go.

This idea is also shared here: https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911311-after-effects/suggestions/34045966-link-layers-in-the-timeline
The comments also mention a decent workaround: make all the layers you want to be "locked together" the same label color. Then you can just use the select label group option and they'll all be selected so you can move them.

Until the day this gets added to AE, there's a third-party solution: https://aescripts.com/varifont/

I would LOVE to be able to control this with type animators!

I would really like to be able to have "ubertwirl" as this sort of feature is often described. Would you want to be able to apply effects to these groups like you can to a precomp?

Anyway, while we wait to see if we get a feature like this, I would recommend that you color-code your layers as if they were in groups. Then, you can right-click on the layer's label color and select all the layers that have that label and click the shy switch. It's a great way to do what you're asking for. (I use the third-party Labels script to make assigning labels really quick (and with custom colors), but you don't have to.)

This happens when the comp resolution is at full, but the zoom level is at something smaller (like 50% or 25%). If the comp resolution and zoom level match, it doesn't do it.

    Hello everybody!

(This post was co-authored by Tim Kurkoski (After Effects Product Owner), Andrew Cheyne (After Effects Engineering Manager), and Victoria Nece (After Effects Product Manager).)

This thread has been sitting here for quite a while without a response. To start, we want to apologize for that. We haven’t been ignoring you or your feedback – this is just a particularly complex topic. That said, it’s time for us to check in with you, clarify a few things, and give you an idea of what we’re looking at for the future of After Effects, especially when it comes to performance.

To start, we fully understand that you want After Effects to be as fast as it can be – utilizing your computer’s hardware resources to render as fast as possible. Over the last several years, we have been working on the performance of After Effects constantly. Sometimes those performance gains…

@Christopher Jeffries I'm curious what's in your benchmark. AE's speed is very dependent on what's in the project. For example, I was just helping out a fellow user over at /r/AfterEffects on Reddit. He sent me a project that took nearly 4 minutes to render in CC 2014 with render multiple frames simultaneously on (3:48, to be more specific). I turned OFF multiprocessing in the preferences and it was significantly faster (1:09), but 2020 still beat the pants off of it at 0:15. Going from well over a minute to only 15 seconds is pretty good. Link to discussion here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AfterEffects/comments/ft1kh8/why_is_my_performance_so_bad/fm9rjyi

@Daniele Ciraolo After Effects GPU acceleration already works on Macs - it uses the Metal framework. In the current release, all of the things that are accelerated on PCs with NVIDIA cards also works on Macs with AMD cards. Fractal Noise, one of dozens of effects that's GPU accelerated is a fun one to play with.

For those who haven't read them, the emails Adobe is sending out are saying that we could be liable to action by third parties. This looks an awful lot like Adobe is in some sort of legal trouble; this isn't a decision they're making, but something that's being forced on them.

Chris, if you want a Nuke competitor, try Fusion. It's very similar, but at a much better price point. :)
