    Hi Klo Hsu

That's an excellent perspective, thanks for sharing.
I really wish ADOBE would engage with this thread.

Sadly, I just don't think that give two ***** about it. They still have a huge user base and therefore it doesn't worry them much that we are all getting depressed about using their software.

I REALLY want to find an alternative.

It's the source code for sure... you load up the same exr image sequence into resolve and it plays back in real-time - over a network. you can grade it and add effects etc and it still it plays back in real-time.

An unfortunate side effect of Adobe adding multi-frame rendering and previewing is that now we can simply just acknowledge that even at its best... its nowhere near close to real-time.

HELLO, adobe... ironically this seems to be the most voted idea?

Are you going to buy into your own voting system and do something about it?

Unfortunately, Adobe also seems to also ignore this thread. No interaction, no acknowledgment, and no action.

    @nuno

I feel a lot of these issues stem from the shift to a subscription model. I don't recall such critical failings when we paid per release. Now, for some reason, Adobe is fine not vigorously testing their releases. It's very likely that adobe has the next several years' worth of features made and is just drip-feeding them to us. So I'm not surprised people's ideas are being ignored. Once again thanks for the info on "left angle".

    Hi The Dudes,

Thank you for contributing to my suggestion, although you leave me a little confused as to what your actual point is.
It is quite clear to me and the rest of the people on this thread that have liked or commented. That I have made a very clear suggestion about Adobe’s ability to solve broken elements of their software…..except for you it appears.
Can I ask - What in particular about the platform do you think is worth defending in the rigour that you have? From what I see, there are considerable numbers of frustrated paying users who don't actually get listened to? I think I'm speaking for the majority of people who have voted for this thread by suggesting that "the platform" doesn't work.. because adobe doesn't act upon 99% of its contents.
If you seek further proof of its failings, just take a look at the in-progress section of this forum. The last time I looked, there were 11 things in progress. Several were re-instating features that had been removed from After Affects, most were fewer than 3 votes and I think there were 2 actual bugs. I welcome ALL those changes... but.. they don't seem to represent the VAST NUMBER of other issues and bugs. Also, they certainly don't represent the "requests" with the greatest number of votes.
As you are already aware, I do make "proper requests". You know this because you have also commented on them today. I'd like to point out that - Adobe have also failed to respond to that thread.
I honestly don't understand people with your attitude. Do you not make regular payments for a service that doesn’t perform correctly? like the rest of us? Do you not experience these issues?
Ill state very clearly for the record my attitude to all this - I completely 100% understand why anyone on this platform might want to vent or rant. Its because they have just done hours, or days, or weeks of work... and during that process they have dealt with countless crashes, bugs, problems previewing, problems rendering and random errors from software updates. All the while they use other software applications that seem to suffer from NONE of these issues. After all that, they come on these forums and spend even more of their time (often personal time) and try to explain the latest pointless bug that has occurred... and they get ignored.

Also, a minor point ‘the dudes’, ironically you appear to have spelt "comprehensible" incorrectly.

    Thank you for annoying me.

another update hasn't fixed this issue... renders and previews still use up 99% of my memory. 9 times out of 10 it will eventually crash my system.

    hi

basically, adobe recommends deleting any preferences etc and reloading the software in a "blank" state. I sort of occasionally seems to work... but the contributes to a new problem of now no longer having any of your preferences ready to go - like export presets for example.

    J

    Jordan Cadby commented  ·

this is still occurring... I had a phone call with you guys and the solutions you came up with have now failed. So, even if it is the preference file issue.. I am now having to remove it 3 times a day to make it work.. until it crashes again.

I can't go back to the previous version, as it has the same issue. I can't go back to the version before that, as it won't allow the import of HDRI files.

SO now, I have to sit and watch my render go out.. stopping it every few frames so it doesn't crash. It completely unworkable for the long term.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE interact with me on this!

"Fixing bugs is mainly reserved to the new versions" - This bug has existed for 2 versions - at least.

"Your WeTransfer-link has already deceased. Jeez your venting is bad too :)" - If only someone at adobe had bothered to read this thread in the last 10 days they could have downloaded it and helped.

have you seen what's "in progress" under the bugs!? 11 things (out of 3000+ posts).. 2 of the 11 are features that were removed and people want back... many only have 1 vote.

they are cherry-picking easy fixes... i cant explain how ripped off and helpless all this feels!

EDIT - FOR SOME REASON I CANT ACTUALLY ATTACH A FILE - EDIT

This is how terrible it is...

I had to stop the recording as the next step is a crash so significant that it requires a reboot. Let us be clear.. this is a HD comp. No files loading in... just solid.. with 2 effects on.

Also in the process of trimming this clip down in after effects, it crashed.. so I had to double the speed to make sure the 128gig of memory I have doesn't run out before its finished rendering. I would love to ROLL back to a version that worked.. but I can't remember one? and now all the plugins I use aren't working in the previous versions. And why should they, most developers just updated their products to work with multi-frame rendering.

Is anyone reading this thread? How many people actually develop after-effects?

Go look at blender, for example, if you want to see how a piece of software is developed. They have STABLE releases that are continuously supported and updated. Trackable fixes and patches. AND they have CONSIDERABLY FEWER resources than adobe.

I just don't understand why Adobe is doing so badly. how can they release this software and it feels so completely untested? what's the point in the BETA if it doesn't fix issues like this.

Its not just bad for everyone's experience, it's bad for everyone's mental health. I make most of my living interacting with adobe stuff one way or another (every day). How do I turn around to clients and say to them.. sorry I wasted an entire day troubleshooting an update that killed my system and workflow. The truth is I cant... i just have to work later and waste my down time.

this is still happening... but actually even worse than before because of the speculative previews that now occur automatically

I seem to recall a version many-a-moon ago that was rendering shots using all your processing power...

Unfortunately, they removed that functionality so we could get "realtime playback"... which doesn't work.

They need to just start again with after effects - re-write the whole thing.

    Hi Michael,

Welcome to the club of miserably annoyed people feeling ripped off! ;)

Just out of interest does previewing in 8 bit make any difference? (I assume if you are using opencolorIO it wont be worth actually working in less than 32bit but i would be interesting to see if it still just hangs - albeit with more frames in the buffer)

Also, as you are using open colour IO - wouldn't it be nice if ADOBE just sorted out the colour workflow for once? Why are we still having to use effects that clip at 1 - even Lumetri is broken in most colour workflows.

ARRG! What a nightmare, it sounds like your specific use case would be a perfect AE scenario! But clearly, it's just frustrating.

it genuinely feels like after-effects is getting worse at pretty much everything, my system is very overpowered and on pretty much all other software it flies by... but as soon as I load up AE... it is like I'm going back 15 years. It is sooo buggy and weird. Its such a shame, it used to be my favorite. Now I really resent paying for it.

My final moan is this stupid adobe user voice nonsense where we all get to vote on problems we want to be fixed! They have actually made it impossible to complain.

    Hi Nina

I really hate the whole vote about an issue is nonsense. I think people get so annoyed about the failings of AE at the moment that interacting with these message boards feels like EVEN MORE pain. ;(

Just out of interest, are there any plugins that you are using? That are not standard AE?

    Is any further information required?

An error occurred while saving the comment
    Jordan Cadby commented  ·

I will list all relevant information below. However please note, that this issue does not occur in the previous install of AE.

2990x Thread Ripper, Windows, Dual 2080ti, 128 gig ram, after effects is installed on an M.2 drive, and my cache is on an SSD.

The project resolution is 2560*1440 but I'm previewing at 1/4. Bit depth when rendering is 16, when previewing it's 8. all footages imported are PNG sequences. There are no expressions in the project. The shot is some compositing of 3D renders. Layers, about 7, some are precomps which have layers in it. Effects are all relatively standard, lumetri, blurs, curves etc. They are being used in Red Giant super comp.

I can easily force a crash by loading up my file, hitting preview, and letting it soak up memory, it crashes at about 90gb.

No errors come up the program hangs for a bit and then either disappears or I have to end the task

I suspect you are getting this issue because of after-effects is not letting go of your memory. So it's not too slow at the start then it fills up your ram and then becomes incredibly slow. if this is the case. i have reported this bug several times over the year and had no response from adobe.

    https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911311-after-effects/suggestions/43841706-18-4-is-eating-through-my-memory-and-then-crashing#comments

It doesn't seem like adobe is listening...

I would say, roll back to previous versions, but there have been issues with every single install I've had for years now. Memory leaks, unable to import HDRIs, unable to export to media encoder etc

After effects is easily the buggiest software I use, and I have to use 3DS Max.
I don't think we have had a single stable release since adobe started subscriptions.

I really really want to completely remove adobe from my workflow, it's WAY too unstable.
