Capture landscape… without phone rotation
One issue that has bugged me for a while with rush is its inability to guess, by itself, that my phone was wrongly rotated when I shot.
I know : I should blame myself. But, knowing that I'm not a pro video artist, I don't shoot everyday and I do the same mistakes again later on.
Plus, other apps guess it right :) Rush wants to be better than "other apps", it needs to be smarter. Sensei smart level.
So, here is the issue :
My phone is 99% of the time orientation locked, for many reasons.
That said, if I want to shoot a scene, and I want it "cinematic", I will use the 16:9 ratio, and rotate the phone.
At THAT moment I should know that Rush guessed the rotation wrong : the UI is still in portrait orientation.
Well, back to edit.
Of course, project is portrait, it didn't guess it. But, well, lets turn it to landscape.
And use (manually on each clip) the fit to frame…
See the attached picture :
If "portrait shot" clips are small in a big black 16:9 that's expected, it fits, 56% of the size.
If "landscape shot" clip on a rotation unlocked iphone fits frame perfectly, that's Normal.
What is WRONG here is that "landscape shot" clip on a rotation locked (aka portrait) iPhone will still display as a vertical 56% shot…
And I have to manually correct it. On each plan.
A few options on your side here :
- Add the right meta data of phone rotation at capture time
- Allow those metadata to be edited later on in Rush's bins.
- make multiple selection edit of clips (I know I failed from the first clip, let me manually correct it fast : rotate -/+ 90°, scale 100%)
- sensei power autodetect all that at import time.
Ps : I already mentioned it there : https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/916423-premiere-rush/suggestions/35841457-rotating-video-by-90-degrees
PPs : Lightroom gets it right EVEN with rotation locked phone, the UI rotates.
