While the heading of this post is “import video as scene background”, and you can’t just grab any video file to do so, you can accomplish the requests of both comments in Character Animator now. By importing a PNG sequence. Once you’ve turned the video background you want into a PNG sequence, using an encoder/transcoder like Adobe Media Encoder, then, in Character Animator, go to:

    File→Import Cycle→
(browse to PNG folder and click on first image of your PNG sequence)
    →Import

You will create a puppet in your Project panel with the name of the sequence folder. Open this puppet in the Puppet panel (Rig workspace) and apply the Cycle Layers behavior to the root puppet layer. In the Properties panel, under ‘Behaviors’, you’ll see your Cycle Layers behavior and an item that says “Start” with a corresponding drop down menu that defaults to “Immediately”. Click on the drop down…

  2. parallax 3d and cameras

3D layering like after effects for background and foreground characters. You can add a camera for easier movement possible blur etc. Just to be able to add a bit more depth so when you do want to add more you then bring it into after effects and the 3d layers are all set up.

  3. Support rigs for quadrupods, birds, snakes, fish and things with more than four legs.

Hello, it would be grew to if CA would support models of various kinds of creatures along with their movements:

    Thanks,

  4. integration with "Adobe Animate CC"

If we could import animations and assets from Animate straight into Character Animator that would be incredible. Is this a feature on the docket? I know you can animate in PS, but it doesn't feel quite as streamlined for the animation process as Adobe Animate.

Also, if we could incorporate tweens, that would be legendary.

Alternatively, if we could just export Adobe Animate files straight to Illustrator while maintaining layers (and finding some kind of solution for timeline animations, maybe distribute to layers and put in folders). However, this feature might be exclusively used for the purposes of integration to…

    Hey all,

In the recent release of Animate, under File→Publish Settings→Other Formats→SVG Image (checkbox)→Options, there is now a checkbox “Optimize For Character Animator”.

Using it, you can export an SVG image that Character can import, that will have a layers structure that works well in Character. While you can’t yet export an SVG sequence from Animate, right now you can get the image from Animate to Character with minimal clutter and add rigging to it for performance. Let us know if this is helpful and what you want to see happen next!

  6. Puppet App Player

I sell a lot of puppets, but I, and many other designers, could sell ALOT more if the customer didnt have to sign up for CH to operate the puppet. Bare with me, I have a solution. Its not only the cost, but some people find using the software difficult if they are not use to PC.MAC based programs, many today are use to using simple to load and play apps. What I propose is you build an app player that could operate .puppet files. I am not saying do it for free. Sell it for $50, I can get…

  7. Webcam using my own phone (using Droidcam or IP Webcam)

My webcam is messed up (very blurry because i put on a tape on it before)

I want to suggest if I can use my phone as a webcam. Droidcam is what I use (using USB), I hope Character Animator detects it too although I know that it is not listed in the 'Camera' or 'Imaging devices' in Device Manager.

I am really hoping for this to be added.

  8. Being able to copy ALL parameters from one puppet and apply it to another

It would be great if you could copy and paste all rigging and other parameters from one puppet to another. Say you're creating minions, each slightly different looking from the others, but largely the same. Hours could be saved if you didn't have to rig each.

And if there were then a couple of issues that needed to be adjusted due to the unique properties of one (say he's only got one eye), that would still be much quicker.

  9. Use recorded video files as animation source

I want to use talent in a studio to record voices and basic character movements for our workflow. We already have proper sound isolation for this, but not in front of computers. Therefore, it would be great to be able to use proper green-screened, high-fidelity audio recordings, as an input into Character Animator. Webcam input only cripples quality.

As a workaround for importing video to animate against, you can import a PNG or JPG sequence (File → Import Cycle…) and use the Cycle Layers option for Start = Synced to timeline. This is new in version 2.1 released in April 2019.

  11. Support for transcripts/subtitles when auto lip syncing

Allow support for importing a transcript or subtitle file, so the auto lip sync could analyse both the audio and the transcript for a more accurate result.

If the program knows exactly what words are said, it should presumably have a much better idea of which 'Visemes' to use.
(Though obviously this wouldn't work for a live stream aha!

  12. "joysticks and sliders" like option in character animator!

this would be a game changer for CH. something like this after effect script: https://aescripts.com/joysticks-n-sliders/#

for controlling facial expression non-live, maybe even the rigging system can improve the live option, this really gives a 3d illustion to 2d animations, and it seems pretty simple in after effects.

  13. A true skeletal system

I'd like to see a true bone system implemented instead of trying to derive a structure from points that can be scattered in different parts of the puppet. Consolidating all the hinge points to a single layer will make editing and debugging a puppet much easier and straightforward.

  14. Allow keyframing using draggers

The workaround for keyframes (using the transform behavior) being used in draggers is good. The problem I run into is now both objects marked (like the elbows) are rotating using the transform tool (because ARM IK is set at the body level). Posing arms would be a lot easier with the ability to set keyframes for arms or wherever draggers are.

  15. New “loop forever” replay mode

The new Replays feature is cool, but it is missing a “loop forever” mode. I want to hit a trigger (e.g. latched) and have the sequence play forever until the trigger is hit again. At present a replay plays once and stops and you have to trigger it again to get it to repeat, even when trigger latching is on.

I assume a third replay mode of “loop forever while triggered” is wanted as a trigger mode.

The usecase is an “idle” state for the puppet. You can record an idle state (fidgeting etc) and and some other states (“frustrated”,…

  16. using video as a source to animate a puppett

I would like to use a prerecorded video instead of a live web camera, so face tracking and audio (lipsync) comes from there.
Instead of applying some sort of filter to the video.

  17. Can we have CYCLE LAYERS be automatically the same way the EYELID behavior is added (by typing it)?

I find that adding the CYCLE LAYERS takes the most time (besides assigning MIDI triggers to multiple hand positions) after importing. It can also be a challenge to explain this to a client when passing off work.

    WHAT IF:
In Illustrator or Photoshop, you could just write "CYCLE LAYERS" and the behavior would already be added? You could even give us a letter to add for "hold on last layer" "cycle once" and "when trigger released" [Or give us the ability to change the default of CYCLE LAYERS in ACA].

    THANK YOU!

  18. Setting to quickly switch between different backgrounds & character during performance

I would like to incorporate multiple backgrounds and characters during a live presentation, to create the look of a two-way conversation as seen on TV and film. I want to be able to switch backgrounds every time a new character speaks, and have both the new character and background appear onscreen.

I can currently achieve background switching by stacking multiple backgrounds in the timeline and then manually fading the opacity of the background(s) on top, but it is slow, manual, and very clear to the audience what is going on.

On a similar note, switching out the characters is currently…

  19. Improve rear hair (behind BODY) when +HEAD is warp independent

Currently you typically have a HEAD group in front of the BODY (so the chin is in front of the neck etc. You may also have front hair dangling in front of the body as well.

But it is hard to have +HEAD (an independent group) and rear hair (to be displayed behind the BODY). The front and rear hair should be both controlled by the head movement.

It would be nice to have a better way of having rear hair attached to head movements, but be behind the body.

    I would suggest having a +REARHAIR group as a pattern,…
