AE frequently resets preferences upon opening
Ever since the release of AE 22.2, it happens quite frequently to me that AE resets all preferences upon opening it. Maybe something like every fourth or fifth time of opening it (but the frequency seems to vary). Other times, I just get an error message that some preference file contains an expected value (but I don't think it resets all preferences, though).
Is this a known bug? Can I do something about it? There are so many preferences I have to add back every time that I can't really work in these AE versions.

Same problem here. Did anyone find a fix? Adobe, are you working on it?

Same here. Been deleting pref folders many times. Somehow the issue finds a way back. Starts with crashes when closing AE, then it starts to hang up after hiting the close button and never really closes. Then the startup crashes begin, randomly resetting prefs. Good job overall.

got the same error today. the 21 :: 30 error
also Ae 22.2 and also preferences were reset when I opened AE.... This happened on my home workstation. I was working on a project file I created on my job's workstation. same AE version. both windows 10.
Maybe this is the answer?
different preferences between the AE in the 2 computers and that made AE reset preferences by itself... and then some error happened because of that?

I've been having this issue since the 2019 version and it has been consistent throughout all versions to the latest build.
A temporary fix I do is to launch AE as admin, but then the error popups appear again. -

Hi John,
thanks for getting back to me!
I'm using Windows 10 (10.0.19043 Build 19043). My OS language is German but I'm using AE in English with "ae_force_english.txt". However, I also removed "ae_force_english.txt" and tried again but unfortunately I'm getting the same error. (Although it does not seem to be as frequent as in English but that could also be due to the lack of intensive testing on my part.)
By the way, I have a Mac, too, and on it there's no such issue.
I remember resetting the preferences at some point but it didn't make any difference.
However, I've always migrated my settings from prior versions, so your suggestion to remove the preferences folder seemed promising. But no luck. Preferences still reset after couple of times of starting AE. (Just to be clear, you mean the preferences folder under "~AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\22.3", right?)
Also, there's another issue ever since 22.2. Sometimes upon closing AE, it just freezes and I cannot quit it even via the task manager. So the only option is to restart my computer. It doesn't make AE unusable for me but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Maybe it has something to do with the other issue?
Hm, not sure what to do now. When I go back to 22.1, these issues do not occur anymore.
Do you have any idea why this might be happening or what I could do to help you troubleshoot?

Hi Constantin,
Thank you for reporting this issue. We have not been able to reproduce it in-house, but we are aware of other customers also experiencing it. If possible, could you provide the following information to help us diagnose what might be going on:
- What OS version are you using?
- What language is being used in After Effects and does it match the OS language?
- Have you tried resetting AE's preferences entirely? There was an issue in 22.2 where preferences were not being correctly written out when After Effects closed, but it was quickly fixed in a patch ( 22.2.1 ). If your preferences were corrupted by that release and not reset since then, you might be working with a corrupt set of preferences that After Effects continues to have a hard time with. If you haven't already, please try completely removing the preferences folder ( 22.3 ) and see if the issue persists.
Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,
- John, After Effects Engineering Team
