Identify layers by moving curser over monitor panel.
When re-visiting a composition with MANY layers and elements, I find it takes time to locate the correct layer pertaining to say, a graphic I can see on the monitor display. It would be great to hold down a key, and activate a mode in which a layer would highlight when the curser on the monitor display holds on its associated object.

In an effort to improve communications between you and the After Effects team, we are moving this feedback forum to the After Effects page on the Adobe Support Community. As requested, bugs and feature requests will be able to live separately in that forum. If you have an item here that did not make the migration, please bring it over to our new home.
See you soon on the Adobe Support Forum!

Hi Brian - That's exactly what I need! Didn't know about that. So, you offer great Training, too! Thanks very much.

Hi Ben
Thanks so much for this feature request. While it doesn't include the highlighting, I'm happy to be able to point out that right clicking on the composition has a Select option at the bottom of the context menu, that has a sub menu listing all the layers that have pixels underneath your cursor position.
I understand it's not live-highlighting like you requested but hopefully it will be able to help you figure out which layer is which!
