Multi frame rendering having trouble with cached frames
this already happened a couple of times.
I leave the comp for some time - the bg mfr rendering kikcs in - the green cache bar fills up.
When it's done i go to the beginning of the comp hit Space (or 0 - doesn't seem to matter) and the playback starts properly in the native project framerate.
Suddenly at some point of the timeline playback stops, and it seems these frames get rendered again - they are still cached - green bar and everything - but the CTI seems to go as if it's rendering one by one. And it's not a fluke.
If I stop playback, go to beginning again and hit space, the CTI plays back fine all the way to the place when I last stopped the playback - so it does actually cache the frames it had problems with before and now plays them back.
Actually if I let the CTI go through the entire timeline and let it rerender the frames it has a problem with, then when it repeats it just goes through the timeline with no stops at all.
So basically when I first hit Space to play, there are some frames that are not cached even though there is a green bar over them, and AE has to render them again before it can properly play the entire timeline.
Now here is the kicker - the green bar is not wrong - the frames are cached.
When I redo the experiment, the green bar fills, I hit spacebar - the CTI plays through the timeline and stops at some point and starts "rerendering" frames - I stop. Go to preferences - disable MFR - go back to the timeline - NOW it plays back without a problem, no rerendering - if the frames are cached greet, the CTI plays them back.
Unfortuately I can't share the project (NDA) and it doesn't happen often, but when it does it's on the same shot and always the same group of frames that have to be rerendered.
PS. I remember someone asking for a faster UI way of switching MFR on and off, maybe a button next to the Home icon - this would be a simple and fast workaround for the problem untill you find a real cause.

Not only this, but multiframe rendering REALLY struggles with MP4 files for some reason. Like, really really badly.

I'm still have this issue! C'Mon Adobe. I'll render something, go to email, see the AE logo bouncing up an down, go to AE and it has to render again.... every time.

I’m seeing this issue as well. It’s more common when I have audio or an mp4, but not always.
MFR enabled, timeline claims to be cached, hit preview… and wait for it to re-render everything.
Turn off MFR, hit preview, plays back immediately.
It’s not all the time, but when it happens… yikes, super aggravating. I’m working in a comp now that was doing it constantly last night, but today has been fine.
He has a different problem but a MFR UI switch would also be a solution for his problem.
Come on, it's like 30minutes coding, the icon can just be HFR, no picture :)
