Color Management choppy playback
I recently found what I can only describe as a bug in the Color Management workflow. I have a Blackmagic Intensity Extreme and it plays back to a JVC broadcast monitor. I am running AE on a Mac Pro dustbin.
I had a project that involved lots of gradients that were banding terribly so using a combination of HLS Noise and Renoiser I was able to get a passable solution. However when I played the timeline back in full resolution the playback although smooth on the computer monitor was choppy on the second JVC one. Reducing to Half res solved this issue. I then rendered out the sequence and reimported it. You would think that it would play back fine but the issue was the same. I then opened Resolve and the playback was smooth.
After lots of investigation and turning stuff on and off I managed to track it down to the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 Color space. If I change to None the issue disappeared and I have now set to Rec .709 Gamma 2.4 and that works fine too.
This only appears to happen when the image is noisy. This is a simple set up. Make three cubes and have them animate say rotate in a loop. Put on a gradient background then add an adjustment layer to the top and add some noise. You can see the playback on the second "broadcast" monitor is choppy and tries to catch up.
