18.4 is eating through my memory and then crashing during previews and renders
After Effects is eating through memory when previewing and rendering. It goes through my 128 gig in about a hundred frames and then crashes.
After effects is getting worse not better
another update hasn't fixed this issue... renders and previews still use up 99% of my memory. 9 times out of 10 it will eventually crash my system.
What are you doing adobe?
Micheal, I have just noticed you can't seem to go back to previous versions anymore? is this actually happening or am I doing something stupid?
basically, adobe recommends deleting any preferences etc and reloading the software in a "blank" state. I sort of occasionally seems to work... but the contributes to a new problem of now no longer having any of your preferences ready to go - like export presets for example.
Jordan - what is the preference file issue?
17.7 was the last version that worked but you now can't install that on CC any more
this is still occurring... I had a phone call with you guys and the solutions you came up with have now failed. So, even if it is the preference file issue.. I am now having to remove it 3 times a day to make it work.. until it crashes again.
I can't go back to the previous version, as it has the same issue. I can't go back to the version before that, as it won't allow the import of HDRI files.
SO now, I have to sit and watch my render go out.. stopping it every few frames so it doesn't crash. It completely unworkable for the long term.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE interact with me on this!
Thanks "the dudes"
"Fixing bugs is mainly reserved to the new versions" - This bug has existed for 2 versions - at least.
"Your WeTransfer-link has already deceased. Jeez your venting is bad too :)" - If only someone at adobe had bothered to read this thread in the last 10 days they could have downloaded it and helped.

Fixing bugs is mainly reserved to the new versions.
have you seen what's "in progress" under the bugs!? 11 things (out of 3000+ posts).. 2 of the 11 are features that were removed and people want back... many only have 1 vote.
they are cherry-picking easy fixes... i cant explain how ripped off and helpless all this feels!
AH I was hoping this was gonna be a response from ADOBE!
Its really not good, going back to older versions is a headache in itself, I have so many plugins as after effects is lacking in so many basic tools, that its almost impossible to go back now!
Also we pay a subscription! If the latest versions are buggy and those bugs are being ignored by adobe then we have absolutely no power! I can't decide to just skip the release, just gotta keep on paying regardless!
I'd like to say it's just because it's the new version and they will get sorted but have had this issue for a long time now.
ADOBE interacted with this thread in JULY and nothing has been done!
If there is no movement on this issue then I'll definitely be checking out LEFT ANGLE AUTOGRAPH where that's released next year! Hopefully some competition will actually make ADOBE interact with their customers!!!!
Yep Blender shows what can be done when people really care! I'm sure the devs working on AE do care but the company itself doesn't seem to value its customers!
I have now uploaded it to a wetransfer link. Jeez this forum is so bad.
EDIT - FOR SOME REASON I CANT ACTUALLY ATTACH A FILE - EDIT
This is how terrible it is...
I had to stop the recording as the next step is a crash so significant that it requires a reboot. Let us be clear.. this is a HD comp. No files loading in... just solid.. with 2 effects on.
Also in the process of trimming this clip down in after effects, it crashed.. so I had to double the speed to make sure the 128gig of memory I have doesn't run out before its finished rendering. I would love to ROLL back to a version that worked.. but I can't remember one? and now all the plugins I use aren't working in the previous versions. And why should they, most developers just updated their products to work with multi-frame rendering.
Is anyone reading this thread? How many people actually develop after-effects?
Go look at blender, for example, if you want to see how a piece of software is developed. They have STABLE releases that are continuously supported and updated. Trackable fixes and patches. AND they have CONSIDERABLY FEWER resources than adobe.
I have this exact problem with similar specs.
Could we get some kind of response on this issue?
There was some interaction initially from Paul Uusitalo (AE Quality Engineering).
This was said ---> "we can DEFINITELY get started on sorting this out." July 23, 2021 10:24 AM
PLEASE CAN YOU FOLLOW THIS UP AS YOU SAID YOU WOULD!
I just don't understand why Adobe is doing so badly. how can they release this software and it feels so completely untested? what's the point in the BETA if it doesn't fix issues like this.
Its not just bad for everyone's experience, it's bad for everyone's mental health. I make most of my living interacting with adobe stuff one way or another (every day). How do I turn around to clients and say to them.. sorry I wasted an entire day troubleshooting an update that killed my system and workflow. The truth is I cant... i just have to work later and waste my down time.
this is still happening... but actually even worse than before because of the speculative previews that now occur automatically
Strange that it's often TRs with 128GB.
Anyway things that helped me were : increasing the memory available to other progs by a LOT more (which kinda negates the luxury of having so much RAM)
...or reverting back to 17, which is what I've gone with.

Finding my comps are eating memory too. 128GB RAM. Ridiculous.

I went back to 17. It's much better.
I seem to recall a version many-a-moon ago that was rendering shots using all your processing power...
Unfortunately, they removed that functionality so we could get "realtime playback"... which doesn't work.
They need to just start again with after effects - re-write the whole thing.
