Crash with Big Sur 11.2, unusable software
Dear Adobe, with After Effects CC2020 17.6 we have been experiencing MAJOR crashes. During rendering and sometimes scrubbing, AE just closes and goes to the desktop. It is a crash and then I have to send a bug report. I am attaching the crash logs to help you determine the issue.
We are on a Mac Pro with Big Sur 11.2 and we even tried removing ALL plugins and reinstalling all adobe software including reinstalling Big Sur, this issue is still persistent.
In the mean time we are dual booting into Catalina 10.15.7 to continue working and this is unprecedented. Please please please fix this issue, we want to use the latest macOS with your software but it's not possible.
The Roto Brush tool crash is a separate issue, but it too should be fixed in the current AE Public Beta build, and will be pushed to shipping in the forthcoming release.

Hi, I am also having a similar issue.
I just updated from Catalina to Big Sur 11.2 and need to use After Effects 2020 to make my living.
Every time I try to use the Roto Brush tool it becomes unusable and crashes.
Looking for a fix for this :/

Hi Paul, than you for the feedback and your constant attention to this issue very much appreciate it.
"Hardware Accelerate Panels" may have helped CC20 so far, I have tried running heavy tasks along side an AE render in the foreground with the same project that was crashing and it seems to have helped. I am now relieved but not 100% convinced its ready for full time.
I realize AE is a complex program and Apple keeps changing a lot of things under the hood (especially Big Sur and Catalina) but I think an AE20 update is mandatory at this point in time for Big Sur fixes.
I will keep trying the beta on the side to see if it indeed is better in Big Sur, but we just moved to CC2020 from CC19 (we usually wait 6-8 months for it to stabilize in a production environment) and CC20 was very stable in Catalina.
My main concern is things crashing during deadlines and I will have our people running Catalina as a daily driver while trying to test in Big Sur and maybe doing some big projects there and see if the problems go away and will report of any issues if they arise.
In the meantime, thank you for your attention and quick responses, if you have any additional notes on how to make this work better to avoid crashes that would be great. Keep in mind its a fresh install of Big Sur from scratch and not a direct upgrade from Catalina (or any previous version of macOS).
Another option to check is to to turn off the "Hardware Accelerate Panels" Display Preference and see if that also resolves the crashing issue.
If the Beta build resolves the issue, there should be a version with a fix to this problem coming in about a week.
As to why Catalina is fine but Big Sur is not, it is most likely that Apple changed functionality we interact with (in this area) as part of the update, and we then needed to make a change our side to continue correct functioning.

Hi Paul Uusitalo (AE Quality Engineering),
I just tried the beta with the same workflow and it seems to be working better for the exact same project with all the same plugins (usually Sapphire, Continuum and some others). No crashes to report yet.
Is v17.6 going to get a new patch to fix this or is AE v18 aka CC2021 going to come out of beta soon? And how come v17.6 works fine in Catalina 10.15.7 but not Big Sur 11.2?
Could you please test this with the current After Effects public beta release and let us know if this issue is occurring there as well?
