Hi Corey,
Thank you for those details. Animating multilayer PSDs should not cause preview playback to stop working; I'm able to do so in AE on our testing machines without a problem. If you are unable to playback at all after caching frames, it sounds like some other factor is preventing playback. Would you mind posting the specs of the system you're working with? OS version, hardware, RAM, GPU, etc. If possible, a screen recording would be extremely helpful so we can see the problem in action.
One thing to try if you are using Windows and getting no playback at all: toggle the Default Output in Preferences > Audio Hardware. There is a known issue where playback is prevented when an audio device is changed, which can be caused by a number of actions like plugging in headphones, a BlueTooth device connecting, or an HDMI monitor turning on and off.
Cheers,

Hi Yes!! Thank you. So, I believe it’s a known problem with animating multilayer PSDs. What happens is AE loads the frames into Ram and then nothing. No playback. Now, I know animating multilayer PSDs is not the ideal workflow but guess what? People are doing it. Designer are still designing photoshop. Handing it to animators who think to themselves I’ll just keep the animation assets in the multilayer psd because it’s available and seems like a clean way of working without realizing or caring it will probably break later. I’m guilty of that. I’m on a project right now like that. Where I’m holding the conform for all of these projects that were built this way. RAM preview doesn’t work. But if you think about it. Ram preview is only useful for previewing small sections. Why not do a full render if it doesn’t take too long? That’s fine for this project and we’re nearing the end. But if this was a little more of a comp intensive project we’d probably have to break out the assets and then ram preview might work. Thanks for responding.

Hi Corey,
Could you give any additional details on how preview playback isn't working for you?
Thanks for any additional information,
