XML import is currently broken on AE, with the following error message:
After Effects: AEGP Plugin Pro Import:
"Fatal internal AAF/OMF/XML error.
Please contact customer support." (0:1134) ( 5027 :: 12 )

I found that Adobe have now completely removed the plugin that handles XML import from the latest Mac OS After Effects - https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/after-effects/kb/pro-import-issue-catalina.html
I too found success in using Premiere to open the XMLs but I handle many files each day so adding another step slows down my workflow quite a bit. Hopefully there is work being done to reinstate this feature.

Same here. I've spent a lot of time w/ Customer Care since last fall about this. It seems to be a Catalina permissions issue - they sent me this: https://github.com/xamarin/xamarin-macios/issues/6474
I regularly do rough edits in Final Cut X and export xml to After Effects. The current workaround is to import the xml into Premiere and create a dynamic link that opens it in After Effects. And after all that it's still not a seamless conversion. BTW, is it just my iMac Pro, or does it take over six minutes to launch Premiere everywhere? -
