Detect that an external hd is not plugged in and request that it gets plugged in
I added an external SSD HD to save cached files generated by After Effects as recommended by various sources to improve performance. However if I forget to plug it in, I get the error that I have attached from a screenshot.
Surely it would be far better to have an option of plugging in the hard drive at this point in time and then being able to point the launch process of After Effects to grab this folder. At the moment if I forget to plug in the HD all my cached files are lost and it is frustrating to say the least!
I do not recommend using an external drive of any sort for the disk cache directory. There are two complications that an external drive (USB, network, or other can cause):
- Disconnecting the drive could cause the error message that you are experiencing.
- Speed of external drives is generally slower than internal drives. The intent of the disk cache is to be a high-speed backup for the RAM cache, so slower drives negate the intent of the disk cache.
I do recommend an internal SSD for the disk cache. If you are using a laptop and don't have the ability to install a second drive, use the laptop's internal drive (which is hopefully an SSD) for the disk cache, and limit the disk cache size in the After Effects preferences to prevent it from overfilling the internal drive.
