Audio playback is choppy - Bug
Audio playback is choppy and sometimes slows to a crawl in After effects. This happens even without any video in the comp on my win7 PC.
My configuration is 2x8 core Xeon E5-2630
32GB RAM
SSD cache disc
Audio works fine in all other applications so I assume this is an AE bug.
Thank you for filing this report.
We need more information before we can investigate this problem.
Is the audio choppy only while After Effects is rendering previews, or after the composition is cached in RAM and playing back?
While After Effects is rendering a preview, audio playback may be choppy or slowed down, as playback at this point may not be real-time.
Once the preview is rendered and cached (the rendered frames are represented by green marks in the Timeline panel), playback should be real-time and audio playback should be smooth.
You can determine whether or not playback is real-time in the Info panel.
If the problem is only that audio is not smooth while previews are being rendered, you can disable audio during rendering in a couple of different ways:
- In the Preview panel, enable the Cache Before Playback option. This causes After Effects to not attempt playback during the rendering stage, which may be more desirable if your comps take longer than real-time to render. (Note that this option, like all options in the Preview panel, are attached to the keyboard shortcut selected in the Shortcut menu of the Preview panel. i.e., If you change the Shortcut option, you can set an entirely different set of behaviors for previews you press that key.)
- In Preferences > Previews, enable the Mute Audio When Preview Is Not Real-time option. This prevents After Effects from playing audio when playback drops below real-time. (Which, again, is a common condition while After Effects is rendering previews.)
If the audio playback problem persists while cached previews are playing back in real-time, we will need to troubleshoot this you. That is more easily done by our support team than on this UserVoice site. You can open a case with them via call or chat at this link: https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html

Please see the attached screen recording.
The first part shows the audio preview stuttering even though it's fully rendered (green bar). Additionally turning off video preview doesn't fix the stuttering.
The second part shows the Info Panel displaying that the video is playing in real-time - the audio continues to stutter.
My preview settings are set to "Fast"
Stuttering happens when using my Macbook Pro audio device as well as my Scarlet 2i2 USB audio device.
I have tried using WAV and MP3 formats at different resolutions.
I have quit and restarted both the app and my machine - several times.
The issue happens whether there are many layers or few. Whether video/animation is playing or not.
When audio isn't stuttering - it slows to a halt.
This is a known issue for years. A simple Google search and Admin's comments to the OP prove that it's an issue.
The resolution is always to kill the audio if it's not playing back correctly.
That's a non-solution. What if I'm animating in time with a beat or editing to a VO? What good does muting the audio do me?
@Admin - I clicked your help link but there is no clear path on getting assistance. Please advise.
