Bug: AE 2019 Pin Wheeling during simple tasks, then Proportional Grid appears. Only remedy is Force Quit.
Was talking to AE lead Victoria on Twitter about this, here's a link our chat to get you up to speed… https://twitter.com/markpaterson/status/1058201534595391489
Basically, simple tasks such as resizing a layer by 10%, adjusting opacity, etc were causing me to pin wheel. Then the proportional grid would appear for no reason. WEIRD.
However, AE would stay alive in the background, refresh layers, say things like "Cleaning up" in the info panel, and even Auto Save. Sometimes the cursor would change back to the Arrow, but as soon as I interacted with the UI, it went back to the Pinwheel and I could do NOTHING.
This would go on for like 10-15 mins until I got bored and Force Quit. It happened about every 5 or 10 mins, seemingly at random.
During this time I was also getting warnings that my Disk Cache drive was low on space, with 'only' 50GB free (It's also my boot drive, and AEP/footage drive too – yes I know that's not recommended but it works for me 99% of the time).
The AEP file is about 130MB, and consists of tons of layers, precomps, and mostly AI files.
After freeing up an additional 200GB of space, I restarted the Mac and since then received no warnings about disk cache nor have I seen this pinwheel issue. Hurrah!
Side note: I noticed that a small number of the footage files were on my local server (a Mac Pro) via gigabit ethernet, which at the time had some write permission issues… Basically, if my server restarts (which it did earlier today), all of its APFS volumes somehow switch to 'Ignore Permissions on this Volume', which is a pain, because it has the opposite and odd effect of denying write access to my client mac! I have to log into the server and uncheck 'Ignore Permissions…' on each volume. I think this is an Mac OS/APFS bug, because it doesnt happen when the volume is HFS+. Whether that had anything to do with it, I dunno, but just thought I would throw that out there.
My setup is iMac 5K 2017, Mojave 10.14.1, 40GB RAM.
Thanks for the update. We'll look into the crasher.
I've noticed that the proportional grid bug causes the grid to be delayed by several seconds before it displays. This could be why for me the grid seemed to appear out of nowhere.
For example, say I accidentally hit the grid keyboard combo thinking it was 'show guides', nothing happened (because of the bug causing a delay), then i correctly hit the 'show guides' combo, guides appear as expected, but then a couple seconds later the grid appears and pinwheels.
The issue I had rolling back my AEP to an earlier version, where it instantly crashes AE2018 is obviously unrelated though. I filed a crash report for that.
Follow up… I just turned the grid on to check if that had the same effect as the problem I was having. It did. Pinwheeling like crazy, had to force quit.
Now I'm curious if yesterday I did indeed accidentally turn the grid on with the keyboard shortcut, which I sometimes do accidentally when wanting to display guides (the keys are right next to each other). Hmm. I'll pay extra close attention going forward, and if it happens without the grid I'll let you know. Thanks!
Hi Victoria. I'm afraid I did not have the grid visible at the times it happened. I'm gonna work on the same aep today, with the same 200GB+ free, and then switch back to only 50GB free and see if the issue returns. It's the only thing I can think of right now, because after I cleared up some space last night the problem went away.
Do you have the grid enabled when the issues begin? We've recently found and fixed a bug with proportional grid rendering, and our engineers think that's very likely what you're running into. The fix will be available in our next update. In the interim, the workaround is to turn off the grid.
