Take the AE and AI devs out for a beer and see why they've never talked to each other
I hate how unintuitive and cobbled the Illustrator --> After Effects flow is. It's like the teams had one phone call years ago and then never improved on the process.
Illustrator: I think and draw here. Then clean up the objects. Creating new Layers (not sublayers) is and never has been in my workflow. It never needed to be. It ruins trying to select things on the canvas, just overcomplicated. To prep an .ai file to go to AE is just convoluted and really trashes the file and layer organization that is correct in Illustrator.
AE: I ONLY do motion here. Trying to design anything in AE, good luck. Pixel snapping, nope. SVG support, nope. Intuitive anchor/position/transform tools? Nope. Easy manipulation of paths and objects? Nope.
Also, copying and pasting paths from AI to AE: pathetic. So complicated, so many steps, good luck explaining. I have to actually count HOW many paths I'm copying, and then go to AE and manually create that many? Are you out of your mind? Also, 2018 and I still can't bring an .svg into AE? I love AE, but so much of my time is spent trying to find a more modern tool that's as powerful under the hood. Lottie really made AE usable for me again, but I still can't smoothly design in AI move it over to AE.
Although the sentiment of this idea is appreciated, this submission is not phrased in a helpful manner, and is being closed.
This UserVoice site is designed to allow ideas to be promoted via user voting and comments. The best submissions are clear, individual feature requests or stories that describe the desired functionality you would like for After Effects, or the individual problem that you are trying to solve.
While this submission generally addresses the the topic of integration between After Effects and Illustrator, the title and description do not address a single feature or problem that can be voted and addressed. The commentary is better suited for the Adobe Forums (https://forums.adobe.com/community/aftereffects_general_discussion). Or, I will happily chat with you about this over a beer.
There are several submissions already that address individual feature requests for After Effects integration with Illustrator. We encourage you to vote and comment on them. or to create new submissions. Here are links to a few of those:

Problem here is that posting these kinds of suggestions are the only way to get even the slightest of responses from your team, so perhaps your team should be engaging on here a whole heck of a lot more than they are.

Don't forget support for custom stroke width. AE still can't taper a stroke on a Shape Layer.

Import AI sub-layers and objects as nested Comps would be something. (In the meantime, Release to Layers > Sequence, promote to root level of document or Overlord Add-on.)
SVG support would also be great.
Hopefully we'll see some substantial AI to AE improvements before, oh... 2028. :)

Man I feel you, also those comments.
Relying on 3rd party plugin sucks furthermore this platform needs an edit function.
