  1. Full program multi-threaded support

After Effects would benefit greatly from being able to actually utilize all cores when rendering, rather than having to rely on a third party solution, like the excellent program Render Garden by Mekajiki.

    Hello everybody!

(This post was co-authored by Tim Kurkoski (After Effects Product Owner), Andrew Cheyne (After Effects Engineering Manager), and Victoria Nece (After Effects Product Manager).)

This thread has been sitting here for quite a while without a response. To start, we want to apologize for that. We haven’t been ignoring you or your feedback – this is just a particularly complex topic. That said, it’s time for us to check in with you, clarify a few things, and give you an idea of what we’re looking at for the future of After Effects, especially when it comes to performance.

To start, we fully understand that you want After Effects to be as fast as it can be – utilizing your computer’s hardware resources to render as fast as possible. Over the last several years, we have been working on the performance of After Effects constantly. Sometimes those performance gains…

  2. Label Colors for Keyframes

Allow users to use the same label colors but for keyframes similar to markers. This would definitely be helpful for character animation to help organize different loops or cycles. Simply add a list to the context menu when right clicking on selected keyframes.

  3. Open pre-comps as Folders / Groups in the timeline

Folders and groups are the same concept—as the already existing "Pre-comp". The thought behind the "Pre-comp" is to “group” a set of layers. Rather than reinventing the wheel and making After Effects more complicated with added new features like groups and folders, we can improve the functionality of the "Pre-comp".

Here is a demonstration of how that would work: https://vimeo.com/137312858

    Suggested Shortcuts:

/ = Split Timeline to show pre-comp. Only works when comps are selected.

  4. “option” + drag to duplicate keyframes and layers

In a lot of Adobe programs, you can hold "option" (on mac) and drag a shape or layer to duplicate it. Except for AE, this is however a very fast and interactive way to duplicate something that could even be applied to effects, keyframes, etc.

Here is a demo video of how this would work: https://vimeo.com/137401276

  5. Control timeline properties from the effects panel - Effects panel to Properties panel

Camera layers, Lights, Sound, these layers will never have effects applied to them, why would we display an empty effects panel and waste AE screen real-estate, while it could be the perfect place to control the properties for these layers?

Think about other properties like shape layers for example and how easy it would be to just control their properties in the effect/properties panel!

Here is how that could work: http://www.sandervandijk.tv/after-effects-features/effects#property-controls

  6. Don't require track mattes to be above the layer it modifies (and also allow re-use)

Requiring a track matte to be right above the layer it modifies seems like an archaic convention at best. Get rid of that requirement and make them like parent layers which can be anywhere and used by many layers.

  8. BACKGROUND AUTO-SAVE, Auto-save should not interrupt your workflow

The title says it all. Auto-save should function in the background and NOT pop up with an annoying progress bar every time it runs. Gets REALLY bad on large project files when auto-saves take up to a min every single time.

Total workflow killer. Should be just like taking snapshots of your project in the background while continue working.

The dialog even pops up and steals focus from another app you're in.

  9. Add back rendering support for H264 codec directly out of AE

Around 2012 you removed the option for rendering a .mp4 file directly out of AE. Please add it back. The work around is to either render in a different codec and compress that in media encoder, or to launch the render directly from media encoder from AE (which is extremely slow and cumbersome, especially when you have large/complex project files). Not sure why removing functionality seemed like a good idea at the time...?

  10. Adopting the powers of node-based programs by tweaking the set matte effect.

Inspired by Node-based workflows. We often want to combine different mattes into one layer without the need of pre-comping—and then even use the same matte for multiple layers.

If we improve the already existing "Set Matte" Effect with the functions of the "Track Matte", we may be on a better path!

Here is a video of how that could work: https://vimeo.com/138156034

    1. Add a "Track Matte" switch to set matte:

This could make the "Transform Properties" of the set matte behave the same as how "Track Mattes" do. (this is possible already by sandwiching the set matte effect between two…

  11. Separate Dimensions on by Default

Add a toggle in Preferences for users to default to Separate Dimensions enabled rather than something that needs to be turned on for every object.

It could fit really well right underneath "Default Spatial Interpolation to Linear" in the General Preferences tab :)

  12. Workspace Import/Export/Sync Options

Allow workspaces to be easily imported/exported/synced without the need to manually copy/paste workspace.xml files from the preferences folder every time a new machine or install is used.

  13. Please add a taper effect/option to 'Stroke' as well as Shape Layer strokes.

Please add a taper effect/option to 'Stroke' as well as Shape Layer strokes.

It's such a simple request that has been requested for over 8 years. The ability to taper a stroke of any kind. Either from the "Effects & Presets - Stroke" or a simple Shape Layer stroke.

  14. Disk playback instead of RAM,

I get that 20 years ago hard drives weren't the quickest and there was a limited choice in codecs so it made sense to playback from RAM. But now we all have SSDs and DNxHR exists I don't get why AE has not been re-written to playback straight from a hard drive rather than moving it into RAM first. It would be great for AE to playback from disk with a choice of codec and bit depth dependent on a users needs and system capability, much in the way that Resolve does with smart cache (see pic). Uncompressed I gather…

  15. Variable Typography Support

With the addition of Variable Type to Illustrator, I would love to see supported in After Effects. The ability to interpolate between the many variables available would be a huge benefit in motion design, streamlining the current process and saving eons of time from the current arduous method. It would open doors to some pretty amazing things.

  16. Shape Layer Repeaters with Selectors (the kind in text animators)

Shape layers could really use some love. I propose that the same way we add selectors and properties to Text Layer animations, should be used for Shape Layer Repeaters.

Draw a square, repeat it 10 times, now add a range selector with position and scale. think of the cool mograph type effects you could create with that system, The best part, is that Shape Layers and Text Animators are practically cousins, so I don't think it would be to hard to implement.

Bonus would be to also have the same path options that Text layers have as well, imagined if…

  17. Cel Animation Workflow

Animate and Photoshop are great tools for cel animation but both lack the usability for modern motion design workflows that After Effects would provide. Adding support for photoshop-style raster animation in After Effects would bring this powerful technique into the right environment, and add features useful for unrelated workflows.

To solve this, I propose the addition of a new Frame Paint Effect, which would would enable a fast, non-parametric way to paint into an effect. It would work like this:

    Photoshop brush engine
    - Painting pixels not strokes.
    - Focus on speed, quality and tablet pressure/tilt support, NOT editability.
    -…

  18. RTL support (right to left languages) is not completed, Hebrew (and possibly other MENA) issues

Here are the issues ranked from the most severe to an inconvenience:

    1. Range selector animation does not work properly for Hebrew Text:
the animation is reversed, for one line you could hack it with setting animation to "start" instead of "end" and reversing the keyframes. with 2 lines you are doomed.

    https://imgur.com/a/zvqwD4z

    2. Highlighting/Selecting Text problems:
this happens when you have combined text of Hebrew and English or Hebrew and numbers in the same layer or Hebrew with another Hebrew that has a change in size or weight. the situation get's worse when you move the layer, the selected…

  19. Multi-GPU support for Mercury engine.

Modern desktops & laptops often got more than one GPU. Currently there's no way to utilize more than one of them.

  20. Scroll Past End - Vertical & Horizontal

Allow users to scroll past the end of the timeline - vertically. Right now you can only scroll as far as the last layer but if a timeline window is huge its a pain to only look at the bottom of the timeline to adjust your last layers.

Also, allow users to scroll past the beginning and end of the timeline - horizontally. Use negative timecode or different colors to indicate the beginning and end. Especially with character animation, it would be immensely helpful to slide layers past the beginning of the timeline, say 00:00:00:00, but still be able to…
