Welcome to the sucker's club. I would suggest you find yourself a copy of CS6 because it's fast and works well enough on even the older laptops, but... well, thanks to adobe that's illegal it seems. I mean. if you were the sort of scoundrel that wants to do work and get paid for it without selling your soul... well, let's just say as possible as it is I can't openly condone getting a copy that doesn't have DRM because that's not right, I'm told.

https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911311-after-effects/suggestions/44254728-stop-adding-new-features-till-the-program-works-atI CAN condone you work together with other concerned editors who just want this program to do what it's supposed to by voting and making these requests more popular. (and maybe use another free or cheap one till adobe croaks or makes a better one.) If you explain that the program simply cannot run on your computers I'm relatively sure customer service can give a refund.
after all, when they went subscription- it stopped being a product and started being a service- and paying for a service but not receiving the minimum agreed upon services, or paying for a service, only for the rules to change so there doesn't need to be the same service after the agreement, is fraud.
if they don't refund it, if you ask, well... welcome to the club, twofold.
