New Text/Captions workflow : UX Improvements - it's kinda great, but kinda horrible.
The new Captions/Text tool on Premiere 15.0 is a huge improvement to the old workflow which was very buggy. I'm impressed with the quality of the Transcript in French, which recognizes 95% of the words correctly (even names). A big thanks to the team who developed it !
But working with subtitles every day, we saw that it also slowed us down on certain aspects which are very frustrating.
Here is some suggested UX improvements by priority :
1 - Make the formatting of the text the same between "edit mode" and "view mode".
In the current tool, you have to double-click each caption to enter "edit mode" which changes the aspect of the text. So when you see an error, and double-click on it, the word you were looking for is often shifted on a new line below. Having the same formatting and removing the need of double-clicking each subtitles would be a huge time-saver.
2 - Making the « Merge » tool more powerful.
The « transcript » method often creates little sections of words, requiring to « merge » multiple lines by hand if you want to have more content on each caption. The merge tool is great for this, but would be a lot more efficient if you add a shortcut to it.
Another thing which is frustrating with it is the fact that you cannot merge the subtitle in a new line below it (creating sometimes huge horizontal subtitles lines). It would be great to have the option to merge the subtitle into a new line by clicking Ctrl/Cmd + the merge icon.
3 - Please, pleaaase let us disable the « auto-scrolling »
I understand the interest of the auto-scroll feature when playing your video. But when subtitling all-day, this feature becomes a real pain (not joking), sometimes activating after you clicked on a subtitle, sometimes scrolling all across the screen without you asking, and sometimes jitterring for no reason. Please just let use disable it (or disable when in « edit mode », because it is actually convinient when watching your video) in the three dots menu in the « Text » panel.
4 - (Bug) Let us « unselect » subtitle.
This is more a bug than a feature, but when you select multiple subtitles (with Maj) you cannot « unselect » them by clicking on a previous subtitle.
5 - (Bug) Sometimes, your edit simply does not apply
It’s all in the title, sometimes, you click on the next subtitles, and the previous line you edited reverts back.
For all theses issues, using MacOS Big Sur on a MacBook Pro 15 with Adobe Premiere Pro 15.1.
Again, these are UX improvements we saw while using the tool, but the most of the changes with the new workflow are amazing ! The fact that there is a proper « subtitle track », the quality of the transcripts, and the « global style » is very much welcome. Theses remarks are just ideas to push this tool further.
