BUG: You cannot add an ellipsis character in the Essential Graphics panel
If you want to add an ellipsis (… instead of a period period period), you have to do it using the type tool in the Program monitor. This is somewhat inconvenient because it pops up in a tiny single-line editing window, but it does work as a workaround to typing the ellipsis character in the Essential Graphics window.
You fixed it! Thanks Adobe!
Haha that sounds about right—I really appreciate the explanation! I'll just leave you with the thought that this is probably a more common shortcut for content editors than the software designers might suspect, which is why it works basically everywhere else in the Adobe suite but here. It would be useful to flag to include in the next rewrite of this piece of the codebase.
…I don't suppose you could use the method that allows it to work in the Program monitor text field… :)

Hi Clint -
For various historical reasons, there is a special subset of commands in Pr which get to override text edit behavior. Option-; is in that subset, Opt-i is not. I realize this is pretty much magical and invisible to the user, but there are other things that would break if we let all key combinations through to text edit fields.
James, I believe it is still a bug. Aren't text fields supposed to override those shortcuts? This is true with the other shortcuts of this type. For instance, Opt+i gives you the î accent, and I have that mapped to Clear In. Yet it works fine to add accents in the same EGP text field.
Whether you call it a bug or a design flaw, I'm pretty sure the way it's working now is not as the designer would have intended, nor is it the way users would find helpful or expected.
Haha based on my experience with software engineers, I suspect "working as designed" in this case might have been engineer-speak for "it's 4:55 PM"… Nevertheless, thanks for chasing this down and finding a much better workaround for us!
Hi Clint, after submitting a problem report and looking to this some more, I have learned that it is actually working as designed. You see, on Mac, Option + semicolon is mapped by default to Find Previous Gap in Sequence. If you change or remove that mapping in the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog, then pressing opt + ; will make an ellipsis.
Thank you for the response, Clint. After your initial post, I submitted an internal problem report for this. It's a problem with the EGP itself and is not specific to Ae text. For example, if you make a shape using the shape tool in Pr, and then right click and Rename it from within the EGP, the same result will happen if you press alt/opt + semicolon. In either case, you can still enter an ellipse by just pressing the period key three times.
Yes, this is exactly correct. I'm on Mac 10.14 (Mojave).
Thank you for taking the time to report this. I think what you mean is that when using a shortcut like option + semicolon (on mac) the ellipses is not added if you are typing inside an EGP edit field. Is that right? Also, are you using mac or win?
I tried this on the latest public version of Pr 15.0 using a simple Ae mogrt with text and it happens just as you said. The ellipses is not added to the Ae text if you are typing into the EGP field but it is added if you are typing into the Program Mon edit box. I can log a problem report for this. I can't promise to fix it in the near future but I can at least put it in a state where it can be evaluated and prioritized.
Thank you agin for letting us know about it. For now, the workaround, of course, is to just type in three periods.
