Premiere Pro 14.5: Rendered Playback Issues
Rendered playback set to FULL resolution does not always actually playback at FULL. Often drops to 1/2 or less frame rate and stutters.
Need to stop and restart playback numerous times for the software to actually engage full resolution playback.
Timeline is set to ProRes422 1920x1080.
Happens with both single GPU and with eGPU.
iMac19,1 with Vega48 with 128GB RAM, 3.6GHz 8-Core Intel i9.
macOS Catalina 10.15.7 (19H2).
RX5700XT is the eGPU when in use.
This is NOT a drive speed issue. All drives connected are SSDs with minimum 450MB/s speeds. Scratch drive is NVMe with 2000MB/s. System drive is Apple SSD with 2500MB/s. No errors reported with DriveDx at all.

Same happens when eGPU is not even connected, just with built in Vega48 and no additional monitors.
Got through today without running into this much (If at all), but timelines were largely not force rendered - they were not “green bar” at the top.
Totally would understand this happening with yellow or red bar, that’s normal and even expected in some cases. Green bar is another story.

Hey there, Brian. Sorry about this. I suspect your eGPU may be at the heart of the matter here. Do you have any monitors hooked up to the iMac? If so, check out this solution. Has to do with running monitors at 2x Retina: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/premiere-pro-2020-choppy-stuttering-playback-in-program-monitor-only/m-p/10786645?page=7#M241138
