In the Essential Graphics tab, you should have a Matte Background checkbox.
It would be super convenient if the Essential Graphics tab had the option to create a solid color matte background underneath the text I'm working on. I'd like to audition the look of text on black without having to disable the footage beneath the text clip or create a color matte just for quick trials.
Yup! And you can "pin" the shape layer to the text layer to keep them in sync with one another using the Responsive-Design Position tools right below the layer stack!
You could put both layers in a Group and then use the Transform tools for the Group itself!!
Also... pro-tip if you wanna get fancy... you can make any text or shape layer a mask by checking the "Mask with Text (or shape) checkbox below the shadow control. This will only affect the layers below it and / or the layers within the group ;)
Hope you go wild and have some fun!

Dacia - Not only are you right, but find that led me to find that you can create a new layer underneath the text with the New Layer tool. Not only can this be done, but there are multiple ways to do it. And here I was thinking I was being so clever. Thanks for the reply!
Awesome news... this already exists! If you scroll down to the "Appearance" section of the Essential Graphics Panel after making a text layer, you'll find an option called "Background."
Click this and you'll get a nice rect behind your text. You can change the color, opacity and padding for it too ;)
