Color Picker inaccurate with MOGRT
I've been testing the ability to easily make Color Palattes available to our editors in Premiere Pro. One option is to look at the colors in the library, and manually type in the hexcode associated (since we can not use the eyedropper to select the colors from the Library). This is inefficient, so I have tried a second method. I created a mogrt that displays the 10 colors as squares. This would work great since its an easy overlay in our program monitor that could be referenced EXCEPT the colors are inaccurate! I've made sure my AE project is in the same color space as Premiere, but the colors still do not correctly display. If I take an eyedropper selection of the on-screen color, it does not match the hexcode of the target color (even if there is a color control in my essential graphic that is correct). Please fix this since it should just be a specific data point and/or allow us to color pick from the swatches in the Library Panel in Premiere.
This image with the clearly defined colors is how the colors appear in After Effects. The version where you see the colors fan out across the spectrum is how they display in Premiere.

Hi Matt,
You shared these Mogrts with me about 18 months ago and I dug up some notes from our email exchange back in Jan 29th, 2020:
"Hi Matt, It looks like you changed the name of the Comp that had all the controls on it. (from Cranfield Name Strap - Right Align to Cranfield Name Strap - Left Align).
Because of this, 18 expressions broke including your Map to White and Map to Black controls which I’m guessing is the root cause of the color discrepancy. As soon as I changed the comp name back to Right Align the colors looked as expected.
You can customize the name of the particular Mogrt in the Essential Graphics Panel without having to change the name of the comp. This way you can ensure that you haven’t broken your expressions."I sent you a fixed version of the Mogrt in that email exchange. Unfortunately, I can't attach it here but I'll resend via email.
At the time of our first exchange, you replied that that had worked for you. Would you mind re-confirming? I'd love to know if there is a new bug or if this is the same expressions issue we dealt with back then.
Thanks,
Dacia

Hi Mike -
I've put screenshots of my AE settings (and more detailed info) here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects/color-discrepancy-for-ae-mogrts-being-used-in-ppro/td-p/12153173My Premiere settings are using Rec. 709 color space. Again, the right-aligned version of this lower third is using the same AE project settings and working fine in the same Premiere sequence. I've tried comparing these two comps layer by layer, effect by effect, and the only difference I can see are position differences (naturally, since one is aligned left, the other right). I'm stumped.

Hi Matt -
Thanks, that helps. What are your color management settings in AE and your sequence settings in Pr?

You're exactly right about PPro displaying black when transparency grid is off. That's why the lower part of the image is black. Attached are two separate images: one showing what I'm seeing in PPro with transparency grid on, the other showing what it looks like in AE. -

Hi Matt -
PPro composites onto black when the transparency grid is off. Can you post a screenshot with the same background in both apps? Without that, I can't tell which color you are saying is incorrect.

Hi Mike -
The difference you're noting is simply a result of having the transparency grid turned off in my Premiere Pro program monitor. It is on a transparent background in both settings (AE and PPro). No other difference that I can pinpoint. Crazy thing is that the MOGRT for the right-align version of this lower third looks absolutely fine when used in PPro, though I have yet to find any differences in the two AE comps! -

Hi Matt -
You are compositing over transparent in AE and over black in Pr, which is leading to the differences I can see. Is there some other difference besides the background color?

I'm experiencing inaccurate colors in Premiere using MOGRTs created in AE - not sure if it's a similar issue as the original post, or if this is something completely different. I've tried Dacia's suggestions below, but they've not worked. On attached photo the top is what it looks like in AE, bottom is what's coming out in PPro.

Thanks for reporting this Roland.
I need to check and see if this ever worked or if it's a recent break. As far as I understood, colors that are driven by expressions do not show the post-expression value in the timeline, either. But, I might be misremembering. I'll report back soon.
Cheers,

Not sure if this is related - Color Swatches in the EGP do not update AUTOMATICALLY when a set of colors are selected via a Dropdown Menu.
Sample code -
myArray = [[66,133,244,255]/255,[25,103,210,255]/255,[24,90,188,255]/255,[23,78,166,255]/255,[210,227,252,255]/255,[232,240,254,255]/255];
mySeries = effect("Color Series")(1);if(mySeries==1){(myArray[0])
} else ...------------------------
The related, Color Swatch property in the timeline DOES UPDATE. To update the Color Swatch in the EGP, I have to use its Eyedropper to click on any area/color in the UI; then the Color Swatch updates to the correctly color.
Please advise on workaround, special diet, prayers etc to remedy this issue.

Hi Ryan!
I talked to one of our color devs and he said there had been some improvements made in the past few releases to help resolve some of these color issues.
I gave it a go in the latest releases: AE 17.0.4 and PR 14.0.3 and things were looking MUCH better, dare I say seamless.
Here is a screen shot of my timeline with:
1. The Mogrt you sent me
2. A native PR Rectangle that got its color from the Blue Swatch in the Mogrt via eyedropper
3. An imported AE Comp that is being rendered by AE via Dynamic Link with a Solid that got its color by manually adding the Hex Value
and lastly,
4. A screenshot of the Comp Window in AE that I imported into PR.They all look the same color on my end on an iMac. Would you mind updating and testing things again?
Fingers Crossed the update will resolve this 🙏🏽
Thanks for your patience!

Dang.
Thanks for the info and that last screen shot. I'm going to go pick the brain of one of our color expert devs and see if I can get any intel back.
I have a VERY convoluted workaround that I could offer as well... but I'm not even sure it would end up being very user-friendly for your editors in the end. Lemme know if you want to give it a try though.
Also if you could make a unique UserVoice Request to integrate the ability to use Color Swatches from libs natively in PR that would be awesome. It will allow for more visibility and for folks to upvote it. :)
Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Ryan!

As it turns out, the RGB values do not change at all while using the color picker, but the YUV, HSL, and HSB values slightly shift depending on the pixel the eyedropper is landing on. I hope this is useful information for your engineers :)

FWIW here is the comparison. The full frame solid background is the target color, the large box in the middle of frame is color picked from the reference mogrt along the top..

Hey Dacia, Thanks for your response. Honestly I'm not seeing a huge difference between the two. For most applications the on screen palette would "pass" to an unknowing eye, but obviously the preferred option would be a true match to our video series specs. For now we can live with what we've gotten out of this and hope that our editors will be mindful to make sure the values are correct.
Is there any chance in the future that the Color Swatches will become available in Premiere Libraries?
Thanks again for writing back.

Hi Ryan,
This has been coming up recently in various ways and its definitely frustrating. I've been able to suggest the following workarounds to a few folks and its improved the outcomes.
Would you mind trying the following?
1. Re-open the project in AE
2. Open the Project Settings
3. Click on the Color Tab
4. Enable "Blend Colors Using 1.0" Gamma
5. Re-export the Mogrt
6. Check out results in PR.Does this bring the colors more in alignment with one another?
