Allow User Control of Kerning in the EGP
Currently the user has no controls of kerning in the EGP, nor is there any information to tell the user what to expect if you try to manually set kerning.
I've discussed this with engineers and James Strawn and Dacia Saenz also of the development team.
Premiere uses optical kerning by default ... which it would be nice to know but NO information of that is found anywhere I know of.
Second ... for some fonts, like Minion Pro, any attempt to manually set a kerning between two letters turns off ALL kerning for that font. The entire text group goes ... bizarre.
I was told by an engineer that they assume anyone setting kerning wants to manually set all kerning ... which is to me a nearly bizarre comment, no insult intended. I just can't imagine wanting that behavior, I certainly wouldn't expect that behavior.
But the weirdness isn't done there. Some fonts turn off all kerning with any manual 'touch" of the kerning control. And ... it's off for some odd period of time or new text boxes or something, then ... returns.
But some fonts allow you to set manual kerning without losing all kerning.
This bizarre behavior needs to be changed to a usable and stable system that the user has control and knowledge over.

Michael, Premiere Text allows kerning in the Essential Graphics Panel as shown in this image. If you are using Motion Graphics Templates from After Effects, kerning is not currently supported for those, but then you would not be able to open the Text directly in Photoshop either. So I'm a little confused about what you are trying to do and why it is not working for you.

Apparently, a bunch of coders who know nothing about fine typography, and could care less, are trying to automate something that's an artistic decision by their customers. I needed to kern some letter pairs in Premiere Pro 14 just now. No way to do it. That meant opening up Photoshop, which (for the time being) allows full kerning, doing my typesetting and importing into Premiere. Absolute idiocy.
This feels like another step by Adobe to regain control of the font market, which it lost years ago after new tools unleashed a wealth of fonts in the market. Adobe is already abandoning support for Type 1 fonts. meaning 300 of our fonts will no longer be able to be used in Adobe apps by next year. You watch. Adobe will kill off every font it can and resort to making us subscribe to its "rental: fonts. Some of which may allow niceties like kerning. Corporate greed. Ugh!

Hola Neil!
Are you referring to more user controls for AE Mogrts in the EGP or for native PR Graphic Text layers?
Are there a different set of controls beyond what we currently have available for PR text layers that in another app that you can share as an example?
Thanks so much!

Full agreement, Neil. Kerning should be consistent across all Adobe apps. It appears that Adobe bought all their text graphic technology from some other company. Weird, because Adobe wrote the bible of PostScript, scalable font technology.
