'Paste onto same track' shortcut
Put the interview on V1, b-roll on V2, titles on V3 - track organisation finished! Not with PPro. You have to turn tracks on and off every time you paste something.
At least give us a 'paste onto same track it was copied from' shortcut.
Alternatively, when no track is selected make it the same as when all tracks are selected except that clips paste onto the same track they were copied from. Currently no-tracks-selected mode is useless (you can't even add edits with the keyboard) so you wouldn't be taking anything away from anyone.

This went live in version 22.5 (June 2022). Please update to get this functionality. Thank you to everyone for their feedback. Learn more here: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/whats-new/2022-5.html#paste-same-track

Track Targeting determines Paste behavior. An NLE should never "assume" what the editor wants, and this is the only way for PP to "know" which track you want to paste to.

@jim yes, I know that’s how it’s set up currently. But I would like it set up without having to toggle the tracks off and on. Because it’s a waste of time as @pierre said. Just have it cut and then paste back into the same track it came from, that’s all.

Problem is timeline pasting currently works contrary to logic.
Editors built their edits from bottom up, starting on the bottom video track and adding layers as necessary. Because of this, lower video tracks are almost always more full with media than top video tracks, making it much more difficult to find empty spaces to paste media into without inadvertently overwriting something.
This forces editors to constantly disable/re-enable video tracks which is a tremendous waste of time. 'Disable' because you need to disable a V1, V2 etc. if there's no space to paste into. 'Re-enable' because you have to re-enable V1, V2 etc if you want basic editing commands to work on those tracks, such as jumping between edit points, cutting, etc.
What PP needs are 2 new keyboard shortcut options, to paste, and insert paste, media to the highest enabled video/audio tracks.
If PP programmers actually used their own product, they would have given us shortcuts to paste media to the highest enabled video track long ago. This simple feature is long overdue, and a clear testament to the PP development team's lack of understanding on how a NLE should work.
Adobe, PLEASE fix this already!!!

This is controlled by Track Targeting, and is the best way for PP to know which tracks the editor wants to Paste onto.

Or... give us new keyboard shortcuts so that media gets pasted in the HIGHEST enabled track rather than the lowest. I'd love to see that too!

Cut and paste clips within the timetime back into the same track they were cut from, without having to toggle target tracks on and off.

There must be a Solo Track Targeting option, to select only the track you want to paste the clip and un-targeting the others.

Jarle Leirpoll commented
Premiere does this already, if you un-target all the tracks.

How would others paste to the correct track? I much prefer choosing where my clips paste.

You are right, this drives me insane. Copy and paste should default to the same track, only target if you want to. It's an extra fiddly step which takes you off the keyboard and onto the mouse.

Pasting is correctly governed by Track Targeting.

its logic, simple and more easier to make the clip paste in the same track i toke from without selecting the track.
like we use to be in FCP 7 , its a small issue but its very annoying.
