Search and optionally replace media paths/names
Instead of auto-linking media, and at least as an option to auto-linking, please provide the means of performing project-wide text searches of media paths (that includes file names as well) with optional replaces.
For added flexibility, please also support regex or similar search and replace syntax.
The following suggestion would eliminate the need for this and other similar features: https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911233-premiere-pro/suggestions/34953352-ascii-project-files
As a user I would be highly offended if Adobe would think search-and-replace functionality to be beyond users' abilities. In fact, imagine if we didn’t have search-and-replace in software how painful document editing would be. In fact, if we always went for the lowest common denominator, then we would still be living in caves.
Search-and-replace would solve a lot of issues. It would obviously be guarded by undo so that, if a user did a bad search-and-replace, they could always undo.
By the way, Premiere already supports listing all the paths within the user interface as well as selecting individual media and replacing it with a different path. This is done by right-clicking on the header in the project tree and selecting "Metadata Display..." and then selecting "Premiere Pro Project Metadata\File Path" followed by OK. The project tree will now display the file path of each and every file-based media. To then change the path of a specific media, right-click it and select "Replace Footage..."
Please note that After Effects compositions cannot be replaced like this: https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911233-premiere-pro/suggestions/34933324-cannot-replace-after-effects-compositions
I agree that a project-wide relinking function is critical, but I seriously doubt that Adobe would ever introduce it as a text-based search-and-replace tool. That's just not user-friendly enough.
However... they could present a UI showing a list of all paths used by files in the project, and allow the user to select one and then redirect it and all those like it to a new location.
