Bug - Audio effect settings being reset when duplicating sequence
When duplicating a sequence, some of my audio effects settings, typically my compressor (usually this is a single-band compressor), has its settings reset.
This is EXTREMELY frustrating, especially when other editors need to jump into a project, and suddenly the sound is messed up.
- Set up a compressor on your Bus Track.
- Adjust settings of compressor to suit audio
- Duplicate sequence
- Marvel as all of your settings are intermittently reset

This issue was resolved in 2018. Please ensure you’re using the most recent releases to benefit from the fix and update.

Hi..premiere should absolutely have the option for the Motion effect to use Nearest Neighbor. (It would still be bicubic by default, as it is now.)
This is very important for sprite art, screenshots, screen recordings, etc.

Could you provide a version number? "2018" is next to meaningless. I'm still seeing this bug in 12.1.2 (Build 69), and the Creative Cloud app (4.8.2.476) says that's the newest "2018".

I'm experiencing this A LOT in v12.1.2 ... thanks to everyone who posted workarounds. I don't suppose Adobe will issue a patch for v12 too? I'm mid project and can't upgrade. From what I can tell "old" versions never get patched after a new release is published.

@ Alan Peevers - Thanks for posting here, Alan. It's good to know that this one is finally going to be gone (it's been a MAJOR pain in our studio, and I'm sure it has been for many others looking at this forum).
When can we roughly expect the patch release?

We have fixed this bug and it will come out in our next patch release (13.0.2). In the mean time, here are two other workarounds for this. 1) Open the effects UI panel BEFORE you dupe the sequence, or 2) after duping the sequence, open the effects UI there BEFORE you play the new sequence. Either should preserve the effect settings from the source sequence.

I'm still using CC 2018, but these steps have been working for me:
1. Open original sequence
2. Move the playhead or do anything (match frame, etc.)
3. Duplicate the sequenceIt seems like when I open the sequence, the settings aren't fully loaded until I move the playhead. For instance, if I have the Audio Track Mixer open and I have Multiband Compressor on a track, when I first open the sequence it will say that the gain is set to "0.0000." But, once I move the playhead, the gain sets itself to whatever it was last (ie 5.04). But if I don't move the playhead or do anything on the sequence, the settings never load and therefore never move to the duplicated sequence.
This is very annoying when you are trying to duplicate several sequences and you have to open and move the playhead on each one before duplicating. But, it beats having to redo all the audio settings for each sequence.

not even the audio track names are moved- back to Audio 1 etc.

@Daniel Hoover - Nice man! I don't get why Adobe hardly seem to reply here, when folks are clearly replying there. Not sure on the point of User Voice, really, if the public forums seem to be their focus.
For anyone who hasn't checked out the forum post Daniel linked to (you should though, it's pretty interesting), the suggested workaround is:
1) Duplicate the sequence
2) Open the duplicate
3) Match frame any clipThe issue seems to stem from playing back immediately after duplication, so the match frame is an intermediate step before the playback.

Got a few replies from Adobe Staff over on the Premiere forums saying they are aware of this bug and a fix is in the works.
https://forums.adobe.com/message/10714793#10714793
They suggested having as many people as possible vote on the bugs we are dealing with, so please go through the links below and vote on all of them.
Also, for all of us experiencing this bug, please follow these steps posted by Adobe staff to see if we can recreate it consistently:

The leaving the sequence open while duplicating workaround works for me.

Update #2
Current workaround that seems to do the trick:
1) Open the project. Let it finish doing its thing (loading peak files, finding its inner-zen, etc)
2) Open the sequence to be duplicated.
3) Open the dialog boxes for all of the compressors/effects that usually get wrecked (just a fast double-click through the lot seems to be enough, but make sure you open each, or else not all of them will duplicate properly). The gist is that you want Premiere to recognise that the effects have been customised.
4) Duplicate the sequence. Hold breath. Cross fingers. So far that seems to be working for me. I'll keep this updated though.

@Daniel Hoover - Yeah, it all really hit us with the nightmare update to 12.1. Unfortunately we got dragged up to that one because of the compatibility issues, and projects coming in from vendors who had already updated.
Don't you love the way the program functionality basically got set on fire, and at the same time you weren't able to open the newer projects in the older (read: Actually functioning) versions?
Anyway, I can confirm that (for us at least) the latest version is definitely not perfect, but at least we seem to be able to use the "open sequence, and then duplicate" workaround.

Earliest post in those threads is from April 2018, which is when 12.1 was released. I'm on 12.1.2 MacOS 10.11.6. There are reports from people that this still isn't fixed in CC 2019, but I'm not able to test that.

Been meaning to make this for awhile now.

Another workaround I’ve used is to duplicate the sequence and rename the original to the next version / then the duplicated one can be yr backup...

@Daniel Hoover - I would agree that all the evidence seems to be pointing towards audio effects as a whole. It definitely seems that way.
Either way though, we can all agree that it sucks.
I just used the duplicate from fully opened sequence workaround again, and it seemed to work, so hopefully that will not fall apart on us.
For what it's worth, we were not able to use this workaround before the latest update. I'm not sure what changed, but whatever it was, it enabled this workaround. Hopefully it works for more people out there now as well. For anyone who can't get it to work, please share your details (system, OS version, etc), and hopefully we can get some correlation going.

Here are other User Voice threads with very similar reports, both about track and clip audio effects being reset:

@Darren Manden - Right, we're applying the Dynamics effect to clips (not tracks) and then copying/pasting those clips to other sequences. Then we will come back later and find that the Dynamics are still on the clips, but upon a closer look, the settings have been reset (i.e. Compressor checkbox unchecked, Threshold set to -20, Ratio set to 1, and Make Up Gain set to 0.) We rarely duplicate sequences, yet this happens to us routinely in the past months.
No other effects exhibit this behavior that we've see - Lumetri, Motion, crop, those are fine. Dynamics is the only problem we've found, but that's pretty much all we use for audio effects.
@Derek Sajbel - We exclusively use Dynamics, but as I've seen countless other bug reports similar to this but referencing other audio effects, I'm thinking it's an audio effect problem as a category regardless of whether its applied to clips or tracks.

Derek Sajbel commented
@Daniel Hoover Sounds like your problem is for effects on clips, which is different but similar to this track effects problem. Sad to hear this problem can happen with effects on individual clips too. This track effects bug has been around for years... ADOBE!!!! However, I haven't been tracking it all the time, but it seems that having a project fully open and loaded, opening the sequence, checking the track effects settings, and then duplicating the sequence just might work as a super lame workaround.
