Fix the merge video and audio clip issue for sound post
I am a film editor, digital imaging technician and post production workflow consultant for feature films, Ads and web series.
I have used Pinnacle Studio, Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5, Sony Vegas Pro and vcd cutter during my early days for post as I was learning the post production process including Windows movie maker :P
I am happy to be back on Adobe CC platform after working on Apple Final Cut Pro 7 on Apple ecosystem from film school days.
Last year, I produced my first independent short film with Adobe Premiere pro cc, photoshop cc and after effects cc.
Even though I had a Avid Media Composer subscription but I chose Adobe Cc over Da Vinci Resolve for edit and basic sound design.
I encountered the following problems:
If I merged clip the video and audio or made a subclip. The Metadata would get renamed so the audio omf sent to my sound designer/composer couldn't be opened on Apple logic pro X.
On top of that it does not take aaf. only fcpxml. We were locked.
Interestingly only Adobe Audition could retrieve the original audio clip names but exporting omf would give the same missing names issue making it appear like blank ghost clips.
So I had to take out four tracks for logic.
A1 - Sound Mono of dialogue
A2 - Sound Mono of dialogue
A3 - Foely/Ambience/room tone
A4 - Ref' background music
I think link clip with selected video and audio would have worked but my co editor had already synced and made the rough cut since we had to script, shoot and edit and upload the film within 50 hours for a 50 hours film challenge. It was too late to make link video and audio.
I also have issue with audio leveling when working with stereo audio levels in Premiere Pro since ages.
The audio meters are not right. Why would some one have to go to 'gain' to increase the audio levels.
The audio levels post exporting also becomes low. Even though the play meters show -12 or -6 as my reference point but I think there is a bug.
Another problem, I always have to use the pen tool twice for left and right stereo db (volume) leveling it's irritating since I come from Final cut Pro 7 world. I can stereo pair and level it once.
That's my brief background with Adobe premiere pro cc.
Now I am going to work as a Dit on a feature film. This will be my third collaboration with the editor. He will be editing on Avid.
This will be my workflow:
Backup the raw Arri Alexa SXT, Mini and Sony A7S on the hard drives with Hedge which also does the verification.
Transcode it on Da Vinci Resolve with burn-ins and Lut.
While I make reports with foolcolor
I will then sync audio with plural eyes and send the editor the following on the shuttle drive.
1) DNXHD 36 8bit 1080p transcodes for offline with meta data
2) Production Audio
3) Synced aaf timeline made with pluraleyes 4 with ale for Avid Media composer.
My concern is that if I use pluraleyes synced timeline or manually sync with the clap or use time code method. Should I use link clip and keep in different daywise sequences or there is a way to make a merged clip/subclip which will retain meta data for video and audio for another software like Da Vinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer/Pro tools?
