"Prompt for Duration when adding Transitions" preference option
In preference pane add a "Prompt for Duration when adding Transitions" checkmark under the default transition times. If you click this, you can type a value every time you add a transition instead of having to double click every transition to change it.
This would be very useful if you seldomly use any one transition time.
If you add audio and video transitions together you type in video transition duration first and then audio.

I have massively complicated keyboard macros to achieve this that get broken with each new version of PP

Ah, you're not thinking big enough.
Far better, IMO, would be the ability to apply preset transitions with a shortcut.
That way, you can have a 5-frame dissolve, 10-frame dissolve, and 15-frame dissolve, and assign them to F1, F2, and F3.
The fastest way to accomplish anything is with a single button press. That's why I have 4 keyboards, no joke.
This is ID #3, and ID #149, on my spreadsheet.
